How to determine what axles I have

I was hoping you guys could tell me what axles are on my jeep or how to find out what axles are one there.

I have a 1989 Cherokee Limited.

I am going to the bone yards this weekend and will be tearing parts off junkers like there is no tomorrow!

thanks for the help!

check this chart against your rig

you should also check the wiki to see what the options were that year, sometimes people have a hard time identifying these just by the pictures

assuming that your axles are stock you will have the High Pinion Dana 30 front axle, then either the Dana 35 rearend (most common in '89) or the highly coveted Dana 44 (which is a much better axle and an option on some but not all tow package cherokees from '87-89)

My 1988 Jeep had a tag on the rear axle housing with numbers on it.

I called dealer and they confirmed Dana 35

are the 8.25's any better than the dana35's? mine looks more like the chrysler axles and it has the rubber filler plug.

Is it considered "stuck" if you get yourself out?

Yes and No. The chrysler 8.25 is stronger than the 35, but there are two versions of the axle. They are 27 spline axles up in till mid 96 when they decided to switch to 29 spline. The 27 is better than the 35 by a little, but the 29 is a decent bit stronger than the 35.

You can get the shafts for a 29 spline xj 8.25 and get a 29 spline locker or set of spider gears and convert yours to the stronger version.

I'm forever grateful to Speedycat and RnEmOvr for their generosity

well all xjs have either a dana 30 high or low pinion, but the rear is either a dana 35 or chrysler 8.25. if the jeep has anti lock breaks its a dana 35, if it doesnt have anti lock breaks its the chrysler 8.25

Wrong!

1984-1986 XJs all had D35 rear ends. 1987-89 had either the D35 or the D44 (rare, only found on some XJs with the tow package). 1990 only had D35 rear axles. Then, 91-95 had either the D35 or 27-spline 8.25". 96 had the same, though supposedly some of the later 8.25 axles in 96 were 29-spline. 97+ XJs had either a 29-spline 8.25" axle or a D35.

All XJs with ABS have D35 rear axles. Most 91+ non-ABS XJs have an 8.25" rear axle, but there were some with D35 rear ends too.

Since you have an 89, you've got either a D35 or a D44, and it's pretty much guaranteed to be a D35 with that rubber fill plug.

booth, assuming you have the factory axle for ur '90 it is the D35, but it may have been upgraded at some point, the D35 has a more rounded diff cover, while the C8.25 has a flatter top and bottom, another give away is the rolled edge on the C8.25 (see the picture a few posts up)

and yes the C8.25 is stronger, the 27spline ('91-96) is a slight upgrade, but the 29 spline ('97+) is a quite a bit stronger and is a noticeable upgrade
