How can you tell how many splines on a tranny/transfer case - '94 XJ?

Does anyone know whether a '94 XJ needs a 21 or a 23 spline NP231 transfer case? Did they come with both types? How can you tell which one you have- is the info on the transfer case?

I have a blown transfer case thats on our 1994 Cherokee XJ and I'm looking for a replacement. I had assumed that was all the info I needed; but when I started looking for NP231 transfer cases in the classifieds section, I saw people asking, "is it 21 spline or 23 spline?" So, I'm wondering if y'all can give this 'newbie' some help to figure out which one I need- so I don't buy one that won't work in my XJ!

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

Nick

You need a 23 spline one, they were 21 spline up until 90 or 91, IIRC.
