How To: Adjustable Front Bumpstops (Lots of Pics)

After seeing the Hockey Puck bumpstop mod and realizing that I needed bumpstops, I decided to improve upon the idea. I have seen them done with holding the pucks together with Epoxy and with a long bolt running through the center, but nothing really easily adjustable.

Here is how I did mine. This may work on other Jeeps with Coil Springs, but I am doing it on a Cherokee.

What you will need:

Hockey Pucks (I bought a bag of a dozen of them from Sports Authority online)
10_Coupling Nuts, size 5/16 - 18
4_5/16 - 18 nuts (You will only really need 2, but I bought 4)
1 foot of 5/16 - 18 All Thread rod
Welder
Drill bit set that goes up to at least 29/64" and something to drill with
Something to hold the hockey pucks still while drilling them
Hammer
Red LocTite

The first step is to find the center on the hockey pucks. This can be easily done by holding one in the light and tilting it. You will be able to see the light reflection comming to a point in the center. Mark and drill the center with a small drill bit. Now take that puck and put it on top of another puck, make sure they are centered together. Then drill through the pre-drilled puck to mark the un-drilled one, repeat this for the remaning pucks. Then fully drill all of the pucks.

Now that the small holes are drilled, step up in bit sizes until you get to the 29/64" drill bit.

Now take the Coupling Nuts and hammer them into the pucks.

Now cut some of the All Thread into pieces around 1" in lenght. If you make them any longer, the pucks won't screw toghether correctly. Once cut, chuck them in a drill and grind the edges down with a bench grinder.

Now put some Red LocTite on the All Thread pieces and thread them half way in to the nuts you put into the hockey pucks.

Now its time to put them on your Jeep

First you want to jack up your Jeep so the coil spring is not as compressed and you can fit your hands between the coils easier. I stuck a jack stand under the arm of my floor jack so it couldn't come down. Now weld one of the regular nuts into the center of the coil bucket (disconnect your battery before welding and be sure to wrap a welding blanket around the area so nothing gets burnt).

Now just screw the pucks together. The threaded end goes on the bottom and screws into the top of the previous puck.

Then I drove up on some stacked vehicle ramps (probably not the safest thing to do) to see how many hockey pucks to use. I ended up needing 4.

Here is what they look like all finished. I could probably get away with less pucks, but I haven't decided If I am going to trim the inner lip of my Bushwackers yet.

What do ya'll think.

Not bad but you need to fill the gap between the pucks and the center of the coil bucket to keep the all thread from breaking. Just cut a hocky puck to the needed thickness and drill the hole large enough to fit over the nut you welded on.

I'm not seeing the advantage of this over the "bolt through" the pucks method other then adjustability, which I don't really believe is needed unless you're switching between different sized tires pretty often.

Care to enlighten me?

Thanks, I just don't want to slam a tire into my Bushwackers. I am thinking about trimming the inside so I can have more flex.

I have been trying to figure out what to do for the gap, I have been thinking about cutting one of the left over pucks in half and putting it in the gap, basically the same thing you suggested.

This method seemed easier to me since you don't have to remove the coil spring, drill and tap a hole. Then bolt some pucks together, find out they weren't enough, unbolt, add another puck, get a longer bolt and bolt it back up.

The coil doesn't have to be removed to do the bolt method

I understand what you are saying however.

Ok, to fix the gap at the bottom, I cut one of the spare pucks in half, and drilled a 5/8" hole in the centers so it would fit over the nuts. It works perfectly, no more gap. I don't have a pic, my camera battery is charging.

Sounds good. Maybe I'll do it eventually seeing as how I switch from 28s to 31s all the time
