House selling nearby...abandoned XJ in backyard...

There is a house 2 blocks away that has had their gold cherokee in the backyard for the past 2 or three years. It hasn't moved since i first noticed it. It is under an awning type thing, covers the whole cherokee, and it doesnt get rained or snowed on, but it gets like a dust/dirt on it. I can hardly see in the windows anymore since it is so dirty. There were toys and such in the backyard everywhere, kind of a run down place. And one day, when i was driving past, i noticed no toys in the yard anymore, and a for sale sign in front of the house. Their is nothing in the backyard anymore except the cherokee. I assume it does not run for some reason. It is a gold color with non-tinted windows and it is a 4 door. I can only see to the b-pillar on the truck, nothing behind it. Their is no rust or damage from what i can see. I dont know if it is 4 wheel drive have the 4.0 or anything else. I have 3 questions... 1. how can i tell what year it is from the front? 2. should i go to the front door and ask them what is wrong with it and why it doesnt run? 3. If i they are willing to give it up, how much should i ask? Any advice would help me in the situation. I am hoping i could pick it up, and hopefully their is nothing too major wrong with it. So any tips are great. Thanks!

"It is a gold color with clear windows and it is a 4 door."

i sure hope those windows are clear!! i dunno what other color they would be. you can tell if its a 97+ from the newer body stile. look at the flares, and the grill. if you can see the steering wheel and it is the spoked kind (w/o an airbag) then its 94 or older. id just go up and say, "i see that you are planning to move...whats going to happen to the jeep" then depending on their answer, ask if you could take it off their hands.

I meant that they wernt tinted. Sometimes windoes are tinted depending on trim style. I cannot see the airbag part so you are right it is a 94 or older.

no no no that's the wrong way to go about it. You need to "help" them get it out of the backyard. Try this. "I noticed that you guys need to move that old Jeep. If you got the title, I can move it out of the way for you." And even if they say they don't have the title but just want it moved, you still win.

Just ask them about it, they might just give it away to get it out of their yard.

1984-86 10 slots in grill and either the 2.5 four cylinder or the 2.8 V6, 1987-96 8 slots in the grill and either the 2.5 four or the 4.0 six cylinder. I know the XJ Wagoneer had a different grill for some years that had 4 headlights. I believe rear shoulder belts were adding in 1990. I know my '89 didn't have rear shoulder belts. Don't know if any of this will help.

The cherokee has an eight slot grill but no rear shoulder belts. It has 4x4, but the old "wagon wheels" (Know what wheels i'm talkin about?) If it has 4x4, does it mean that it has the 4.0, or is their a 4 cyl with the 4x4, because i've never seen that. So, 8 slot grille and no rear shoulder belts....so im guessing 87-89 right??
