The Vehicle Code says that if the tires extend past the body they must be covered by flares that extend to the width of the tread face of the tires. No restriction on tire size except that the overall width of the vehicle can't exceed 102".
I don't remember what if anything it may have said about requiring mud flaps in this situation... anyone else?

My tires stick out beyond the flares just a little, lots of guys I know have tires that stick WAY out past the flares. I've seen trucks with 44 inch tires with nearly none of the tire covered. I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over or being cited for big tires, or tires sticking out past the flares.

A buddy is a cop. I always ask him CVC questions. In Kalifornia, tires can't stick out more than 2 inches past the flare. They rarely, if ever, pull you over for too much exposed tire. If you're doing 90 in a school zone, they'd probably write it up, but other than that, you'll be okay. Bring the Jeep and check out Pismo Dunes OHV Area while you're here.

I live in Pacific Grove (next to Monterey) and can tell you, you don't need mud guards and as stated above the laws says the fenders/flares need to cover the tires. Having said that I know a lot of the cops in both towns and I can tell you that not one of them would ticket you unless your tires were out 6 or more inches past the edge of the fenders/flares. Spend the rental car $$$ on gas for the XJ and have a good time!

Yep, you will be fine here in CA. I am not far from Monterey. Mine stick about 3 inches out, I have uncovered flood lights on the roof, no doors, and no problems!

well that is good to hear I am glad I am ok on the laws of the state makes things easier when I move back there. When I lived there a few years back I owned a classic truck not a modified jeep. Hopefully when I get back there again permanantly I can meet up with some of you locals and we can do some wheelin together

But hey, I just saw you are on a 6" with 35's.....that's gotta be badass And might stand out to the police a tad more. (I supposedly have a 5" lift.....31's barely fit.... 6 and 35's?!?!? I'm guessing the flares went byebye?) |

Looks good man!
I wouldn't worry too much here. On a daily basis, I see some outrageous rigs, and no trouble for them. My buddy has a old Toyota, bright red, 37's, no flares, and wheel spacers so they stick out like crazy. Never been ticketed or warned. ------- What axles are you running? 30/35? And how is driveability? This is my daily driver, and my long distance (long *** roadtrips) vehicle, so I wouldn't want it to be a PIA to drive. How does it treat you? I am thinking about an 8" with 35's (I refuse to cut my fenders/flares for some reason!)

Thanks for the compliment i love my jeep. I am running a 30/35 setup with 4.10s going to upgrade to 4.56s soon the ride is great since i changed from 31s to 35s I only have the 2.8 and there was minimal power loss it seems to handle better with the 35s I take it on long trips all the time with no problems just havent ventured threw that area with it yet and I remember living there in the mid 90s the cops where not that friendly. Overall I think you will be happy with an 8" lift and should do just fine without cutting your fenders
