Hood vent ideas

After reading ElPaca19's Deck Plate install thread last night I couldn't stop thinking about stupid hood vent ideas. At first I was thinking of gable vents with fans underneath that would make them open like gills.

That is just dumb.

With some searching, I found several other options.

I found low profile mushroom vents.

possible supplier

Those might be cool. If you are into the round look. They can be closed to keep crap out. You can even get them with powered/solar powered fans.

Searching for marine clam shell vents I found these.

possible supplier

I like them, and the lip on the inside would keep most of the rain out.

Searching for those nameless old style vents found on mail jeeps, I found these.

possible supplier

For a second I thought I was really on to something and that they would look cool, but look at those things. Those would look a bit strange on top of the hood.

Then I finally found the correct search term. HINGELESS 2 WAY VENTS!!! I couldn't think of the name for these for the longest time.

possible supplier
another size

I think those would be awesome! If they are good enough for 18 wheelers, they are good enough for our XJs. You could leave them shiny, or paint them to match. Close them up and there is no need to worry about birds nesting in your engine bay.

What do you guys think? Anybody else have some other options, or possibly tried any of these.

p.s. I didn't worry about prices with those links. I'm sure you could dig up better deals.

With just plain jane louvered vents that don't have the option of closing, do you think they would let in enough water to do that much damage? I wouldn't think that would be any worse than driving through a large puddle a little fast. I've seen a couple of writeups where people have taken vents off of other vehicles and installed them in their hoods. Is that a bad idea?

The whole Le Baron vent idea is great. I was just looking for other options. The weather here changes constantly. I figure I'd get all sorts of crap in through my hood with just the Le Baron vents. I don't want to have to worry about my distributor or TPS or whatnot getting waterlogged.

Oh I got ya. Good thinking. Do you ever get around the Red Wing area? I used to live there, before I moved to California and joined the military.

They have been on for about 9 months and they have seen very heavy rain and some snow with no ill effects to report.

I like, but too much $$ for hood vents IMO.

You could use those as mini drains for the floor boards.

These are cool--being lazy, I'd not want to have to stop and close them if it started to rain whilst driving. How hard would it be to make the remotely controlled?

You could probably attach a spring to them so they would pop open, then run a cable with a pull handle to close them. Kinda like the air grabber idea I posted in the other thread. I might be up for trying this on my rig. It would be great for the winter when I don't need the cooling, and I don't want snow packing them up. There might already be some kind of system out there. If I get some time later I'll do some searching.

Found another company with tons of vents.
Austin Hardware
They have hingeless 2 way vents in black too.

Seeing as they can flip both ways, it might take a double cable system to make them remotely opening.

I'll keep researching.

I run with the LeBaron hood vents on my XJ. They have seen snow, rain, etc, with no real problems. A very small mis-fire the last time I had the TB apart, but that was because the electrical connectors weren't put back together completely. *d'oh!*

I located mine back in the hood farther than most people do. While this caused me to cut into the rear brace a little, I did it so that the TPS isn't directly under the vents....

*will have to dig for photos...*
