Homemade bumper / air tank
I'm making a bumper out of 3x5x1/4" rectangular steel tube. The plan is to seal it off with the welds and use my A/C compressor to fill it up. Has anyone ever done this before? Any idea how I should do it?

This is a tried and true design the only thing that I would caution you on is having the ends tig welded or brazing over the the weld if you mig weld it. Once you stop the bead on a mig weld it is next to impossible to get it air tight. You will also want to pressure test the bumper after you weld it.

Yes, google is good one for all the info on that one, but like others have said, getting airtight weld on the end it a pain. Make sure in addition to the nipple you have a way to drain it out and maybe an air gauge. (nice but not necessary)
I just gave up and converted it into a fuel tank, I can store an extra 20 gallons in the front and rear bumpers! Just kidding.

Stick welding is arc welding, as is Mig.
I've made my rocker into an air tank and it is working well. It is difficult to do but not impossible. This was also discussed recently in a thread I responded to in the ZJ section. I think you'll find it helpful. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/use-sliders-air-tanks-553071/

Making pretty looking welds is not that difficult. Making good welds that are air-tight IS difficult for many people including me. At least it was harder than I first anticipated.
