Homebrewed Gutter-Mount Roof Rack
Before we went to the beach this summer, I spent the day with my old man building 4 metal bracket thingers to create a roof rack. I'm not going to get too far into detail on exactly what we did, unless someone wants me too, then I will. Pictures are worth 1000 words. For more info email: brburckhardt@yahoo.com
I have *.pdf files of the pieces that you can print out and trace onto some steel if you want. I also have the CAD files for all of you that can get hooked up with CAM work... (THANKS CHRIS!!!)
here's the pictures:
original sketch, never did get that tiny skull & crossbones sticker...
These are screen shots of the *.pdf's... e-mail me for the full size ones
CAD file, I was bored at work so I did 'em in 3D...
final product, this is only 1, obviously we made 4, they arent interchangeable, each set was custom, even though they were all CAM cut to exact tolerances from 11 gauge steel, our home bending and welding wasn't quite as precise... the crossbars are aluminum tube, ordered online, and yeah that's a magic hat cap on there...
All finished on the XJ. The rack held a 9'6" longboard for 10 hrs. from NC back to PA, so it's definately on there. Can't wait to throw the snowboard up there this season!!!

Thats a hell of a contraption and you're a good artist, but Im not sure how strong mounting that to the rain gutters....cant u fig a way to mount it to the existing rails?

I have a Wenonah canoe and they sell brackets similar to your design.

ddo: I'm pretty sure the gutters are one of the stronger spots to mount roof racks, anybody want to clarify?
red96: I took some classes at ITT tech a while back, now I draw crap in CAD all day...

Yep, gutter mounts can actually tolerate a larger load than the stock roof rack!

haha, that would be nice, but by the time I made them and shipped them, they'd be more than yakima towers...
Oh and, side note: Pep boys sells door trim (the stuff to protect your door edge) I cut that into strips to cover the bracket edge before it went down into the gutter, you can kinda see it in the one pic. I would definately do something like that to protect from rust. Only probalem is it comes in 25' lengths (I have a little bit left over)

Well thats good...i didnt know....i just know ive gotten my gutter caught in some tree branches sometimes and its been ripped off! Haha...
