High Output 4.0

I have just purchased a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport with a 4.0. It is a nice vehicle with a great package. I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 “High Output”. There is a noticeable difference in the power of the 2 vehicles. What is the difference in the two engines? What makes the high output engine have more power? Can I change a chip or card in the computer to make the regular engine a High Output version? What would I need to do to convert the regular 4.0 engine to make it equivalent to the High Output engine?

Your 4.0L in the 2000 is a High Output also they just dropped the name.

From the specs sticky:
4.0L I6 EFI "Power Tech" - 177 hp @ 4750 rpm, 220 ft lb @ 4000 rpm - used 87-90
4.0L I6 MPI "Power Tech HO" (High Output) - 190 hp @ 4750 rpm, 220 ft lb @ 4,000 rpm - used in 91-95 and updated in 96-01 to 225 ft lb torque @ 3000 rpm (00-01 models use a distributorless ignition system)

I can't tell you why your older jeep seems like it has more power.

change the oil and airfilter in the new one.
see what that does.

and maybe if it needs a little more motivation,

you can get a high output sticker for it

The difference could be gears. There could be minor differences in tire size and weight (97+ metal hatches 84-96 fiberglass).
