High brakelight on XJ 2.5 TDI not working

I had just about given up finding out why my high brake light would not light, despite several bulbchanges. The other brake lights work perfectly and I believe that they are on the same circuit/fuze. I discovered a couple of days ago that my high brake light does actually work, but ONLY when the rear door is open. Not exavctly when I need it to work. Does anyone have the same problem or suggestion how to get the da.... light to light when the door is closed?
