The ideal thing is to wait until the hottest part of summer. Work in the morning and be finished before the temperature goes above 75 degrees F (if possible). At least be done before it tops 80. Then clean up your paint brush and throw away the roller you used for that coat (it doesn't pay to clean rollers when rollers are cheap an Xylene thinner is expensive). Then quit for the rest of the day.

Don't even try to work on this during hot time of the day because the bedliner gets tacky to quickly to be able to apply it.

Next morning, do the next coat.

This way nature or God will work with you, instead of against you. i.e. - you'll have lower humidity and temperature when applying it in morning, and in late morning, afternoon, and evening you'll have lower humidity and higher temps curing it better and faster.

Don't do like I did and apply in a garage in winter. It was 25 degrees and damp outside and I had heaters going like crazy in the garage, but couldn't get the temp above 65 and damp. So that cool garage temp made for easy application since it gave me plenty of working time before it got tacky per coat. However, it was difficult to get it to fully cure. I put on one coat every 24 to 48 hours. It took a long time to get firm, but tacky (ideal time to apply next coat). Then after my last coat, I had to wait 2 weeks before it was cured enough to reinstall seats and drive it, and it continued stinking for months (the rest of the winter). i.e. - it took the rest of the winter to finish curing.

If I'd done it in summer, the summer heat would have cured the last coat in 2 days good enough to put seats back in, and the stink would have lasted only about 1 week. i.e. - fully cured in a week.

Get mother nature working for you, instead of against you, unless you have a heated insulated garage/shop. I didn't. My garage isn't insulated and can't be heated above 65 in winter, no matter how many electric heaters I have going.

Very nice. If it were mine though, I would have first laid down a coat of POR or eastwoods rust preventative paint. If your going to coat it...you might as well make sure your not going to have to redo it any time soon.

I think I'm going to actually herculine the inside of my car and put the vinyl floors after I apply the herculiner... I started mine up today and drove it for like 2 mins, and it was pretty loud inside, and that was like 20 miles... I can't imagine 70-80 or something.

so again I ask.... how much do you think the herculiner will quiet down the car? I don't want padding because if it gets wet again, I don't feel like ripping out the padding

and how long did it take for it to dry?

I think the Herculiner prevents rust since it makes an air tight seal to the metal.

I used 3 coats of Herculiner on my XJ and the end result was just as quiet as the original carpet pad and carpet had been.

By contrast, I hired it done for my LJ, and they sprayed on one thin coat, and I can hear some extra noises now. Like mechanical noises of the tranny and transfer case. Maybe I hear the differential too. Also hear more water noises/splashing when driving on wet roads.

3 coats (like my XJ had) deadens sound very well (as good as stock carpet pad and carpet). 1 coat (like my LJ has) does not deaden sound very well.

it actually deadens the sound quite a bit. even with an aftermarket cat-back exhaust, the sound is louder then normal, but definetly not unbearable. i have driven 80 mph and the sound is just fine.

as for dry time, i applied the coats in the summer, so it dried fairly quickly. as soon as i got one coat down, i went back and did another while it was still tacky. i left the doors and trunk open for a day or so. it smelled bad at first but after a week it aired out really well and it doesnt smell bad at all anymore

Maybe i missed it but i dont think i read what the "proper prep" method was. Would it be best to sand it all down and primer it since i read it doesnt stick well to metal?
Also im in the PacNW so its not very often that we have days 65 and up that often in a row.
In this long discussion i have become afraid to do this. Im afraid that ill mess it up and it will ruin my jeep.

cool thanks man! I guess i'm going to go and pick up some this weekend and do it myself.... how much extra do I need besides what comes in the kit to make 3 even coats? (everything covered)

I washed my interior, and sealed all the rust spots, so that is 1 less thing for me to worry about. I just have to use the 'abrasive' pad and get everything scratched up now I guess... I'll probably just paint right over those drain holes too.

most important thing for me is to make it quieter inside. I'm done with cars that I can't carry a conversation inside.

it definetly wont ruin your jeep. as for prep, just scuff the surface really well with sandpaper, or the abrasive pad they give u in the kit. i was saying that this stuff does stick well to the soundeadener that comes factory, so its best to remove it before you start.

that sound deadener you have on your XJ... I didn't have that. I guess it was a later year thing...

I should be good to do as far as letting it dry etc, heck, i live in FL, should take me just a day for it to fully cure. I just hope the smell will go away quick

it depends on how thick. i probably put down three coats but it ended up around 1/4" thick, but from what CB3 is saying, he probably put down even more. i did my coats with about 3/4 of a gallon.

I'd like to put a thin smooth coat around the sides and top, and get multiple textured coats on the flooring. Do you guys think I should dilute and run it through an undercoating gun for the smooth sides and ceiling?

i would look into the stuff that gets sprayed on like rhino lining or linex, and see what they use to spray. im not sure if the grittiness of the herculiner will allow it to pass through a gun. check with your local rhinoliner or similar dealer and they should be able to let u know if a spray gun would work
