It's great stuff. I did my last XJ.

However, a quality gas mask is a must, or you'll end up dead, sick, or to brain damaged to enjoy your XJ or anything else in life. Seriously. I'm not BSing anyone.

That Herculiner is great stuff, but will ruin your brain and/or lungs if not done in a well ventilated place AND use a quality gas mask. Not dusk mask, gas mask.

Also gas masks must fit your face. i.e. - a big face needs a big mask. A medium size face needs a medium size mask. A small face needs a small mask.

Also, you must be clean shaved as a baby's butt for the gas mask to make a good seal on your face. That is why the military started requiring a clean shave starting in WWI when gas attacks and gas masks were both invented.

I didn't know about the clean shave and so my gas mask leaked a bit and I breathed enough Herculiner fumes to get sick as @$%# from it that day. Then I started clean shaving and then the gas mask sealed real good after that and protected me.

Also, one gallon of Herculiner is not enough, IMO. I used 3 gallons and that worked great because that was 3 heavy coats and it was about 3/16 to 1/4 inch thick and sealed and deadened sound as well as the carpet pad and carpet had before. This also made the sound deadener goo seams on floor no problem.

It was awesome.

However, 3 gallon cans of Herculiner costs as much as a 5 gallon can does. So a guy might as well buy the 5 gallon can in the first place and do the inside of one XJ and the bed off 1 pickup all for the same money.

Also, I found that heavy/thick nap rollers from a paint store work far better than those cruddy little rollers that come with the Herculiner kit.

Get half length rollers and full size paint rollers and buy plenty of extras cause it's not worth trying to clean them. Also, you'll want half and full length roller frames to put them on to use them.

Also, I found having a couple cutting in paint brushes very useful to go where rollers didn't want to fit.

A cut-in brush is a brush with an angle tip.

Ya, the rollers that come with the kit are useless.

However, I bought some thicker nap rollers from the paint store like I posted above and that worked great and gave a nice texture. Also laid it on nice and thick per coat (3 coats), which deadens sound. Also used a couple quality cut in brushes to help edges and tight areas.

If you do more than one coat, the trick is to do each coat within 9 to 12 hours in hotter weather, or 20 to 24 hours in cooler weather. However, don't do it at all unless the temp is at least 68+ degrees Fahrenheit in your garage.
Of course it'd be ideal to do this outdoors in summer (fumes don't build-up on you as much - though gas mask is still needed). If doing in summer, work in the morning before it gets hot, cause you can't work with the stuff if the temp goes above 75 degrees cause it gets tacky to quick (before it's applied).
By doing each coat within that time frame, it remain slightly tacky, which means zero surface prep necessary between coats. If you wait longer, then surface prep is needed before another coat can be added. That being to take a towel and soak it down with acetone, or preferable Xylene (nasty stuff) and rub down the prior coat with that. That makes it a bit tacky again, which allows another coat too stick. So it's never to late to add another coat.

that a good tip, the paint should still be somewhat tacky

i noticed some places (especially where the goo stuff was) that it didnt cover extremely well, i think ill go back over it again with a couple good coats

i too noticed how well the herc deadened the sound, with a good 3 - 4 coats it does really well

Well, if you do more than 1 coat (I like 3 coats), I strongly recommend using a heavy, thick nap roller from the paint store. A new roller for each coat.

The heavy nap roller increases the texture, which is nice when you're done because it's more non-skid.

The heavier texture from a roller is also nice because it gives lot's more (rougher) surface area for next coat to stick to the prior coat. That's important for durability.

If you put it on smooth with a brush, there is less surface area (less roughness) for the next coat to stick to.

So a heavy nap roller gives better texture for more foot traction later, but also increases the durability of the applications because each coat sticks better to the coat below it.

See what I mean? Use the heaviest nap rollers you can buy and a good roller frame from a quality paint store. Don't use the crap rollers they give you in the kit.

Lastly, and now you're going to want to kick me, or yourself.

After I finished and had spent bucks on Hurculiner. I found out my local lumber yard sells Xylene based deck coating that is exactly the same stuff as Herculiner, except in grey, though they can tint it like paint.

5 gallons of this same stuff sold as deck coating costs the same as one gallon of Herculiner. Are you happy to know that, or do you want to punch me now?

I mean the best quality rubbery deck coatings that are Xylene based and use Xylene for thinner, just like Herculiner does.

I'm not referring to those lower quality, water based, latex deck products. I'm referring to the high quality Xylene based stuff.

So a guy can by 5 gallons of the Xylene based deck coating for the cost of one gallon of Herculiner and get same result, or perhaps better result since he'd have more to work with, and/or could do all his vehicles and/or friends vehicles, and/or do some deck on his house.

Always good to know where the bargains are after the fact, huh?

Ya, me to. I found out after the fact. The dudes at the lumber yard were laughing their a*ses off at me cause they'd done all their pickup trucks on one 5 gallon bucket of Xylene deck coating that they bought together for the same cost I paid per gallon of Herculiner.

so the stuff we need to look for is specifically Xylene based? do you happen to know any name brands off the top of your head?
