Herculiner and Seam Sealer

A friend gave me a gallon kit of Black Herculiner for which they no longer have the truck for. Never been opened.

1.) Is this enough to cover the interior of my XJ floor (Replacing carpet, which HAD to go..trust me on this one) back to the rear seat. Not under the seat in the well, but just back to the bottom of it?

2.) Do I have to get all of the seam sealer off? Or is it just a matter of cosmetics? Will it affect HERCULINER adhesion? Because frankly, I'd rather just leave it on, scuff it, and coat it , if possible. If not, I'll get it off.
3.) For those that have done herculiner or monstaliner or the like, how did you mititigate the heat from the floor? And how is the noise? Can it be mitigated?I have driven it a bit, and the bare metal DOES get hot, and there is increased noise floor due to the, well....floor.I have the factory heat material on the floor, I'm guessing that will have to come off.


I think the seam sealer looks kind of cool, but that could be laziness talking

I used herculiner on my old jeep liberty. Word of advice, take the seats out and do under the back seats. Also, taking out the center console isn't a bad idea either. As far as the heat is concerned, herculiner will insulate a little bit as it is rubberized, but it will still be hotter than with carpets. Theres not much you can do about it. As far as noise, it will also be a little louder but you're driving a jeep not a luxury car. Your tire whine from nice nobby tires and stereo should be louder than anything else anyway. Herculiner is a good product but it smells to high heaven so allow for it to be good weather for at least 3 days of perpetual windows open.

80 sqft did my floors all 4 door skins rear hatchand partial roof. Well worth it IMO. Made a huge difference on interior noise levels, tranny/motor heat is mostly non existent. The dampening mat not only deadens sound with the butal rubber components it also disipates the heat with the foil facing. No foul odors or falling of like cheaper asphalt based roofing products/"FatMat" deadeners.

Do it right and do it once

Thanks notsomello. Roger on the seats. I'd like to do the back bed too, so was just wondering if it would be enough. I took the center console out and the plastic interior lining on the inside, as well as the passenger and drivers seat.

Looks like thunderstorms today, so prolly not a good day to do it, but I can do the prep of the interior surfaces. Take the rear seat out, etc.

Amen on the stereo and tires. I am mainly concerned about the heat. I think I will put a heat shield over the muffler and cat, that should help a bit.

thats interesting stuff. IS that herculiner that you covered it with? If so, I could leave the factory headshield down and not worry about it the heat.This is the stuff to which I'm referring, with the foil top.

It's U-Pol raptor liner but the best part of it all is the Dampening mat, made a HUGE difference in acoustics. Makes your stereo more responsive, virtually eliminates road noise, disipates/reflects tran tunnel heat.

Honestly you could just run the mat as interior.

When I said there's not much you can do about it, it was in reference to the HERCULINER product. Of course there are other products out there that you can use. But since he already got the herculiner for free I doubt he wants to go spend more money on another product when, in my opinion, its not that big of a deal to begin with. Cool product though but owning a wrangler, there's not much it could do about road noise for me with the top down and doors off lol []

I experimented a bit(peeled and soaked a bit of the adhesive and foil in a glass of xylol), and found that xylol dissolves this stuff. I think it's RTV frankly. Anyway, I scored the foil part to allow for penetration, an doused it in xylol. Went back and got off the foil about an hr later with a chisel. doused with more xylol, by now, you have mostly the adhesive. Douse it and let it sit, the longer it sits, the more it dissolves. Yes...dissloves. This was necessary for my drivers side, as it wsa damged, an was a bit a rust underneath. I am wondering if I put a bag of ice on the passenger's side for about an hr or two, if it would be more likely to just "peel" off. worth a try.

I was on the fence about removing these. I am glad that I did remove them, however. As under 3 of the 4 I have removed so far, I still have 1.25 under the rear seat to remove, I have found rust. They were apparently intact, but moisture and air had gotten in there at some point, and resulted in what looks like interior surface level rust. I'm not going to get the herculiner in this weekend, have been working on floor prep instead. The largest patch of rust discovered so far is under the rear seat. thanks notsmello for telling me NOT to ignore under the back seats. Still I have extreme minimal rust, but what to deal with it as properly as I can and get a nice, lasting result.

The final way I dealt with the factory heat/sound shield, was to scrape the aluminum off with a pry bar. This requires much more elbow grease, but is quicker than scoring the aluminum. Then, I douse with Xylol, and attack with a wire brush, this stuff is very RTV like. Wipe off excess, apply more xylol, hit with wire brush and let soak, come back and wipe it off an hr later. It does affect seam sealer, making it softer, I can brush it away with a wire brush, not easily mind you. Well that's how I did it. IT is still a pain in the ***, but not nearly as much as without the xylol.

Please do not take the seam sealer out. That is there because its where the panels are welded from the factory. It will adhere to it.

Following up on my old threads for closure!

I finally did complete this and am pleased with the result. I did take the seats out and do under the seats as well as the center console. Do this when you will have a span of good weather, it really stank for a long time. My jeep offline when I did it waiting for a new engine, but it took about 2 weeks to stop noticing the smell. Went over the floor with a wire brush, including seam sealer, cleaned with xylenol and rolled on. Doesn't take long to actually paint it on, the devil is in the prep work. I was concerned about the grittiness of the surface, but it was unfounded. It is rubber, so what you have is really good traction. I left drain holes uncovered, so I can drain floor pan. Anyway, here's the results.
