I had to change the front caliper on my 2000 XJ. The caliper was binding. Got a rebuilt one at AutoZone. Anyway, I can't get the banjo bolt to stop leaking. I inspected all the mating surfaces and they look fine. I replaced the crush washers again just now and just kept tightening-way past the 22 ft/lbs that is called for. The original washers were squished down real nice. Anyway, I think it may have stopped leaking but boy is that bolt tight-probably double the proper torque. Is this normal? Thanks guys. Stu
get some new crush washers... then heat them up real good with a torch (until they are glowing red) and then dunk them in some water. this wil anneal the washer and soften it up so it makes a better seal...
Actaully getting the washers red hot then quenching them right away does just the opposite. To anneal you need to let them cool at a slow rate. By quenching it red hot it traps the metal in a hard state.
I ordered 6 more crush washers from Jeep. I can't believe they didn't have them in stock. Anyway, I'll try both heating methods and try to soften them. Somehow it seems that the new washers are harder than the originals. The originals were certainly crushed, but the new ones barely deform. I assume with the high price of copper they're some alloy. Hey, you guys are both right about annealing copper. I just looked it up and slow cool or quenching works. Ferrous metals will become brittle when quenched. Stu
Annealed them, became soft as overcooked broccoli. Just snugged the banjo bolt and no more leak! Thanks again!
