HELP my XJ is afraid of the water!!

So I took my new to me 94 xj 4.0L out to go wheeling today for the first time. I just bought the jeep Wednesday and put in the sunpro triple gauges water temp replaced front OEM water temp sensor/ oil pressure T off of original sensor/ voltmeter (not hooked up yet) the gauges work great. So the first time I drive in the rain with big 1’ deep puddle on the street bout ¼ mile before the trail it starts to sputter. 500 feet into the trail(dirt road) it dies won’t restart. What would cause this? I know what fixed it time or taking out the spark plugs. But after I fixed it I proceeded on the trail and it happened again. There was Still water on the trail. After I fix it again I decided to go home and stopped on a dry trail on the way home no prob wheeled alone for about 20min no prob

any help would be great

Did you go thru the water puddle? How fast? If you are tearing thru water you probably got some water on the electronics.

I did the same with my 2.8 and got a tiny little bit of water in the carb not enough to do much damage but it sputtered and stalled. i let it dry for a while it started right up, and im getting a new engine anyways. be carful with that though. if you were tearing through a 1' puddle u might have gotten water in the engine bay, i never drive fast through water now. even the really shallow stuff.

The XJ wiki here is pretty good.

http://www.jeepforum.com/wiki/index.php/XJ_Cherokee

Check out the Renix troubleshooting at the bottom (that applies to you, correct?). This article, page 3, is especially helpful:
http://**********.free.fr/OWN/trouble%20shooting.pdf

Please let us know if you find a solution, this is a common problem that most people don't come back and report a solution on.

I'd just take it easy next time.

I never fly though deep puddles, in case I need to back up, for fear of depth.

???no u can go through water just take it easy and dont make a big splash unless u have water protection, snorkel, ect. but in deep water dont go to slow or u can flood the engine bay, and get water in your axels..no bueno.

I know when i had my wrangler, i had a cone filter on it, and while at silver lake went through a puddle a little to fast and it got water on the filter. It didn't like that too much, started to sputter while i was still in the water. put it in 4low got out of the water and it died right away. took the plugs out, no water, reinstalled tried to start, nothing. took the filter off, started right up. while it was running tried to put the filter back on, sputtered like mad, then died. ended up waiting around for an hour to let the filter dry in the sun...

we took off the hose that connects to the TB so it was just an open TB and it still would not start. the filter and box were bone dry anyway

your battery might not be able to hold a charge it could also be a tps or another sensor problem
