Headlining tutorial

If any of you remember me earlier I had asked what do to about my roof. Well I took some pictures and here is this outcome in a nice write up. Since I was doing my roof I decided to do my Brother's Saturn. It was worse than my Jeep because this orange foam would fall in your hair.

1) Remove the roof- For the Jeep and the Saturn this just took unscrewing the "oh sheet" handles, the sun visors and any visible screws in the trim. Any trim that was hard to remove but did not have any visible screws were held in with plastic pins.

For the Jeep they were all happily already broken but the Saturn sadly still had some hanging on.

(you may recognize the shoe prints lol)

1.5) Hardon- The roof seemed very flimsy so to try and stiffen it up with some Scotch Gard and gluing the cracks. I didn't really notice it getting stiffer so this seemed like a wasted step even after waiting a day for it to dry and a second coat.

2.) Remove the old material- This was easy for both roofs because the material was already coming off. The very front of the Jeep's roof actually did not come off so I left it there and cut the material. Some chunks came off near the edges (sat in my garage for a year) and many other parts were already missing under the material from the previous owners I assume.

3.) Clean up- The Jeep's roof had been previously reupholstered so there was not much to do. They did not use enough glue (I could see what little glue there was). The Saturn needed the orange crap removed. For this I used a rag and gloves to prevent getting full of fiberglass.

4.) Lay it out- Spray some glue on liberally I used 3M general trim adhesive. I accidentally used the heavy strength first but I felt this unnecessary.

Turned out to be about $50 for two cans. (better be good)

5.) Stick it- I laid the material out on roof and glued half first and rubbed it down and made sure there were no wrinkles than did the other half. The valleys before the bumps were the most difficult to get material on but this was much worse on the Saturn roof and I assume newer roofs with more bumps.

6.) Get out, were done?- I used a sharp knife to cut some holes were the lights and the visors go. With another set of hands, my buddy Matt held the roof up while I screwed back in the handles and trim.

Now The before:

And the after, all buttoned up:

And for your entertainment, what I did to my brother's Saturn

If any of this is wrong please tell me and hope this helps someone out!

wrong is that red/orange color...looks better with the bare roof
seriously, if that was the 2nd time the headliner was replaced what makes you think it won't fall down again?

The spray adhesive was the way to go...did mine with brush-on adhesive...hard to get it even.

Nice work, but why did you go with orange and not black?

The orange has a story behind it I'm sure no one here wants to hear about.

And I used more glue, possibly higher quality glue and defiantly better material. The black material feels like astro-terf and is really heavy.

Plus, bed liner doesn't come in orange

edit: I plan on taking a better picture of the 'after', it came out blurier than I thought. I've also noticed people asking about the orange but not one person wonder why I did black pirate material in my brother's tan Saturn lol.
