I have a 91 Cherokee lerado and all of the lights will come on except headlights. Bright lights wont work either if I pull the switch they come on but go back off when I let go. I'm sure there are posts on this but so far I haven't seen one that shows how to test the headlight or dimmer switch. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Turn on your headlights and reach up under the dash and wiggle the headlight switch connector. I have had this problem on both my XJ's in the past. You may need to replace the connector, headlight switch or both, or maybe just clean the contacts (and use some dielectric grease). If you've done ANY kind of headlight upgrade (even just getting better bulbs), you may need to install relays so that the lights run through it instead of the switch itself. The stock wiring isn't really that great and wasn't made to run better bulbs that we have today (think Silver Star over stock).

I've tried it even tried putting another switch in but it was used so it could have been bad not sure but I've been told that if the bright lights and the fog lights wont work that it would be the dimmer switch is that true or should I start checking all the wiring? Also I did replace both headlights but they were the regular sylvania headlights.

When you replaced the headlight switch, did it have any appearance of melting or burning on it or the wire harness connector?

Also, you HAVE CHECKED the fuse, right?
Hmm.. just noticed you said the high beams will flash but not stay on. I've seen many threads here on that. You should be able to search and find something if no one else chimes in.

I took a look at the harness that plugs into the headlight switch and its a little melted and I put my old switch back in and now I can hit my bright lights and they come on but when I turn the key on they go off. When I have the key on and hit the brights it makes a buzzing sound. So can I change the harness out without have to change a bunch of wiring?
