Hack n Tap RE or Yoke

I believe this is the RE NP231 sye right? Why cant i find just a yoke like that to bolt on my NP242?

Is the spline count the same with the NP242 and the NP231?

I have a NP242 and i bought my lift finally and getting tires this month anyone recommend a good wheel and tire package for a decent price some 32", i would like to hack n tap the output shaft and put a yoke on there instead of the plate and splicer joint. I have been crawling the forums and found that the yokes on these cars have 27 splines and will fit my output shaft once hacked down to size.

80-82 Ford Thunderbird
80-82 Mercury Couger
82-87 Lincoln Continental
79-80 Lincoln Versailles
84-88 Lincoln Mark VII

Is this correct? Has anyone got a yoke on their NP242 output shaft? or is the RE hack n tap the only way to go? Does tom woods make a yoke like this? Once i get my hack n tap and some time ill start my build thread with lots of pictures

Can someone please help me out. Thanks

This - http://www.rubiconexpress.com/JeepParts/Product.aspx?part=RE1801 - is the RE H&T for your model year of Cherokee.

Your slip yoke is internal and you need the red part and the seal to close off the Tcase, then you H&T the output shaft. Once the Red part and the seal are installed you can get a junkyard or a new 3103-27CV yoke and use it instead of the RE flange.

so i can not go with this route i think tom woods sells the Tcase seal for the np242 i am just trying to find this for my tcase. going with the tcase seal and yoke instead of the flange and spicer. Am i just barking up the wrong tree? should i just get the RE hack n tap and spicer from napa for like $250+?

you dont even have to call them to order the yoke.

http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IROR&Product_C ode=IR-X_HNT

just select to get the yoke only.

get the seal from RE and the yoke from IRO. and im almost positive all the t-cases (231 and 242's in XJ's) have the same spline count.

IDK Iron Rock sold the yoke separately. When I helped my buddy install his Iron Rock yoke he said he called Iron Rock to buy it and I never looked at the website.

Be sure and get the drill and tap Iron Rock sells. Hardware store tools won't do this job.

sweet sounds good. So i have found out that the rear output shaft is 27spline, so is the Iron Rock yolk.
did your buddy have to hack the yolk down to size or was it already short? also this is a fixed bolt on yoke right?

I think this yolk needs to be cut right?

The Iron Rock yoke came with instructions for measuring and cutting the Tcase output shaft. We ended up trimming the yoke some so everything fit right. A 4" angle grinder with a cutting wheel worked great on both the output shaft and the yoke. The Iron Rock yoke bolts on just like the one in GoJeeps picture in your first post.

Thanks EVERYONE for the input. I will write a detailed write up on a hack n tap np242 with a yoke. It should help out many jeepers. THAX

Ok after searching through the forums i have found out that those yoke are 27 spline, NOT 21. :-)

Also that this is the same yoke used on a TH350 transmission.

We need a 3103-27CV yoke

1.172" x 27-spline with a 1.50" seal diameter
-It uses a 1310 series U-joint
-Needs to be U-bolt style attachment
-This is a fixed bolt on style yoke

I was wrong, I thought that the rear output shaft on the NP242 was 21 spline.

This is the Correct information for late model np242 tcases. The input shaft from the transmission is 21spline, the rear output shaft to the rear axle is 27spline.

These are the correct yokes we need.

since you do not have the tail cone like the 242 on your tcase go with just a sye fixed yoke, dont get the RE flange and NAPA spicer.. get a yoke listed above and hack n tap it yourself for half the cost. This way you do not buy the flange for 100 and the spicer for 60+, you can probably do the whole setup for under $30 if you get the yoke from the junk yard, or you can buy a new one for around $40-100. One shot deal you can use a yoke to connect up a front ds in the rear. i believe you can bolt it right on if you have a d35 or d44, you might need to change the u-joint if you have a different axle. Not sure tho. Get good drill bits and a good tap!
(Ewen91) - When i purchase my RE 242 kit next week, if you still need the flange ill sell it to you. you live in Lunenburg, MA?
