Grinding sound at accel

2000 XJ, grinding sound at hard acceleration from a stop. You can hear it and feel it under all floor boards. It does stop about 5 seconds after take off. I have replaced U-joints, bearings, etc., also checked the motor mounts, changed gear oil and trans fluid. I cannot figure out what it is. Could it be something with the t-case?

Thanks for your help!

Does it go away in 4wd? Mine does the same thing its an 87 and has done it since I got it about 9 years ago. I haves greased and add fluid to everything but it hasn't gone away so my guess is the t-case or Trans or torque converter.

Wheel bearings were changed, I don't think it's my tail pipe...possible though, I will have to check that out. It may go away if 4wd, but I am not 100% positive at this point, it just started doing it in the past 10K miles maybe
(150K on it). It does get louder and faster depending on my acceleration. I am due to swap brakes, I will try that as well.
Thanks for your replies, more are welcome.

If it gets louder and faster, you can rule out exhaust.

Brakes sound like a good culprit to me.

Put it in 4wd and just drive around the block, You'll know if it goes away as soon as you accel up hill from a stop. I have fulltime 4wd and it never does it when its engaged. If you only have part time it wont hurt just keep it under a mile or so.

If it were my brakes (front), it would be pulling one way or the other, unless you are referring to the drums...they could possibly not have any friction material left. You can feel the griding, at hard/fast accel, under the floor boards in all 4 seats. It does not "grind" at slow accel.

I'm hearing the same kind of noise on my '94. The brakes are good, and I've seen no indication of dragging brakes. The only time I notice this is at or close to WOT acceleration. "Normal" or slightly heavy acceleration doesn't cause it. If I didn't know better, I'd say the tires are spinning, but it will do it if going to WOT from 20-30 MPH. I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure its not spinning tires under those conditions.

This was happening to me. Check to see if it gets worse when you engage the e brake. Mine would rub on the driveshaft. Hence the faster and higher pitch when going faster. ;D

check the tranny mount, check the flywheel cover. if it isnt these two or anything that you mentioned it could be something serious like an almost dead tranny/TC
