So mine Being a 1996 and the door says 1995 is this something I should be concerned with?
TITLE SAYS 1996, its a Cherokee country model, I get the clunk kinda feels like a down shift when slowing down a hard downshift it feels like, but I bet this has never been done on mine before.

Sorry if this has already been covered, I didn't see it anywhere.
Is this something I should do on my 2001 2WD xj? I don't have the rubber boot, but my slip joint looks the same. I recently replaced my u-joints, and noticed the slip yoke had a little ATF on it but no noticeable grease. Does the 2WD transmission lubricate the slip joint or should I pack it with grease? Thanks for any help.

Just bought these to use for the boot. http://www.harborfreight.com/3-16-in...ies-92515.html Seems like they should work pretty good. Plus there will be plenty extra left over for the future.
edit: those did not work, couldn't get them tight enough. Bought some heavy duty zip ties and used those instead. Shifts are definitely smoother now, also no more thumping on take offs.

Why not drill it and fit a zerk fitting? And lube it at every oil change?

Did mine yesterday-it got rid of the loud clunk but now have two lesser clunks/squeaks.

Great thread. Thank you so much for this. I would never have attempted it without reading this first and best of all.......It freakin works. 5/16 is the socket size. Swivel head would be good because two of them are hard to get to. Dont be afraid to tap the driveshaft with the hammer....it comes right out and before you know it your holding a big hunk of metal in your hands thinking Oh crap, I hope this goes back together. No worries, it does easily. Plastic zip ties work for the boot. It feels good to fix something yourself. Even did the new liftarm struts.....super easy and best price is on ebay....strongarm. Now I will tackle the sparkplugs. 2001 Cherokee Limited.

Bump for good info. Now I know the boot is supposed to be clamped, Im missing the clamp closest to the t-case. I went and bought a locker to replace the gears in the diff where this could be the issue right here. I greased up the slip yoke when I did new u-joints last month however I didnt use as much as you and the boot not being clamped leaves the splines wide open. The grease seemed to really help for a few miles.

Remember to let the vehicle cool off if you just drove it, I got real excited to take the DS off to grease it after a cruise. I heard a sizzling, took a sec before I realized it was my hand on the blazing hot muffler. A nice battle wound to the collection.

I used normal permatex anti seize and it worked great for a solid 2-3 months. Im going down to the garage now to regrease it. Im going to try Chrysler compliant general purpose grease this time.
