great write up!
i have a clunk when my zj downshifts from 2-1. do you think this could be the cause? i always thought it was a mount of some sort but it seems this could be the fix?

i dont remember hearing anything like that with down shifts, that might be more of just the backlash getting taken back up as the motor tries to rev up

its usually upon acceleration or stopping, not down shifting, to the best of my understanding with no grease in it the yoke cannot slide so it pops in and out more than sliding. but backlash is like when you shift into drive and you hear "kunk", which i think would also happen when downshifting since the drive line will end up having the power removed from it as the tranny shifts and then as the motor is speeding up to match the drive line speed force is put back onto the motor from the wheels spinning faster... if that made any sense in type.
idk off hand what your vehicle has since its not an XJ, i know on XJs its a 97+ but idk what versions they use on the ZJs when. if you have a slip yoke theres no hard in greasing it but it might not be what you are feeling

I have a random clunking while driving not stopping. My son describes it as when your on a wooden roller coaster as your going up the steep hill. It doesn't happen all the time but mainly between 40-55 mph.
Would this fix my problem?

My clunk developed after 2 months of owning the XJ. I have had CJs/Wranglers my whole life but had never had a Cherokee and my clunk felt like the transmission was slipping. This thread literally made my year when I realized what I was feeling was in the driveshaft and not the tranny. Jeep is good as new now. Thanks alot

I realize that this is an old thread but it's a great write-up and I think I've ran into the same issue with my 2000 xj.
A few questions since i'm a newb:
1. What causes the slip joint to be loud?
2. If it's slipping across the splines doesn't the lube just cover up the real problem?
Thanks,

1. Earlier models were lubricated with a bath of ATF fluid in the transfer case.
97 and newer is a re-design. No ATF.
2. It isn't a catastrophic problem, it's more like a nagging design issue that you have to feed/lube once in a while. We have no choice but to lubricate it periodically.

I enjoyed reading your presentation, very well written. I need to ask about the"clunking" in my '87. Is caused by the same lack of lubricants?

maybe a lack of lube but yours is lubed from the transfercase/transmission. or it could just be backlash in your drive line or a bad u joint

Thanks,

it makes a sound just because it binds up then finally slips

Thanks everyone.
@mattathayde: So if the noise is caused by it binding up then slipping doesn't this, basically, mean that the splines are being destroyed over time? And the lube is just there to cover up the noise?
Also, if the splines are being worn down does anyone know how long they last? I started hearing this noise about 2 weeks ago but from reading it doesn't sound like this is an immediate threat to the driveline......
Actually, in thinking about the design how would it bind up since it just slips in and out? I guess I don't mentally see what would be going on here that isn't blatantly destructive.
