You probably could but it'll just wear off in a week I think. Most people use anti-seize, yet some say you should use special nickel plated driveshaft grease.

Anti-seize really shouldn't hurt anything though and there are way too many people that do theirs using it that it can't be an issue.

Im going to do this today. Ive got CV joint grease, that should be good right? Ive seen that anti-seize really isnt for high temp or friction areas

ya, it will help with the clunk but the whole adage here of needing a hammer to get the u joints out is no joke (i have a 01 with 78k on it and i had to give it a lot of wacks)

i got some other issues going on that gave me a clunk still that an italian tune up fixed for the most part.

Occasionally when i come to a stop, there is a loud clunk and the brake pedal gets really stiff for a split second, almost feels like it is rebounding back at me....is this the clunk that you guys are describing?

not so much the added symptoms, at least i never noticed the breaking issue. check your u bolts that hold in the back axel. you may have a combo of things causing it. if you havent ever greased the SY or it hasnt been done for 2 years do it, its not to hard and should be done semi often (2 years or so unless you put a lot of miles on it then do it more often). i would also suggest if you dont do much highway driving to grease the yoke, check the u bolts on the axels, and then run it on a good long highway drive and see if that clears it up.

Most slip-splines will vent the grease out before it really gets into the splines.

Take it apart, or almost apart, wipe the swarf out of it, and grease it with your favorite flavor of heavy grease.

This will work on anything from Jeeps to Broncos, to pickups trucks, vans, etc. - they all do the clunk, and this will fix it.

My Bronco did this 9 years ago and i never could figure it out. I'll be doing this to the XJ in the morning. Finally found this! Found the same info in another forum too. http://forums.off-road.com/jeep-mid-sized/8425-clunk.html
I'm hung on moly grease or anti-sieze.
I guess my brake vibration (after rotors and drums) is another problem.

GM makes a special grease for this. Its called molylube if i remember right. GM had this same problem with mid 90's tahoes, suburbans, and pickups. It works pretty well and it isn't to expensive and a can of it will probably last you 10 years if its for you vehicle only. We do it ever three oil changes on my brothers tahoe. Because pulling the driveshaft on that truck is a five minute job.

That's funny, my buddy who has been a mechanic for 25 years, looked at mine and said it's no big deal, knew that the GM trucks had this problem too, but didn't know there was a maintenance fix.
