Word, maybe thatll get rid of my jeeps clunking.

Would you advocate replacing the U joint at the same time?

I just did this and OMFG I am so freaking Happy this stupid clunking is gone!!!! Since the day i bought my XJ i had this bad clunking when taking of from a stop. I checked the Ujoints and all were tight so i was fearing the rear end was crapping out on me. Thanks a million for this write up as i would have never even thought about that being the problem.!!!!!

Nice writeup. Can you tell me:

1) What size straps you used to replace the old?
2) Where you got them?
3) Is there a special tool required to install them?

Good to know. I figured my 99 was also just lubed up by the ATF in the transfer case. I guess I'll also be doing this soon.

Would someone describe the clunking symptoms though? I don't have a clunking when moving from a stop, but I do have driveline vibrations at speed. I'm just trying to do as much as I can before taking it back to the stealer ship.

Read this link for a description of the "clunking" we are talking about:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/bowling-ball-syndrome-390720/

Your driveline vibration could be any one of several things. Is your Jeep lifted? If so (and especially if it's an automatic), the increased angle of the driveshafts can cause this. Try first installing a transfer case (tc) lowering kit. Easy to install, and inexpensive. If this doesn't solve it, you may need a slip yoke eliminator installed in your tc. Other causes may be a driveshaft that is out of balance, wheel out of balance, etc. Good luck.

Is it possible that my slip yoke only makes noises while stopped and very cold out (20 or below) ?

Completely stock.

I've been trying to narrow this issue down for a quite a while now. The dealer doesn't even know whats causing the noise/vib. They told me wheel bearings...I replaced them...no change.

2 questions about this procedure:
1. Did you re-use the old straps and bolts on the u-joint?
2. What torque do you set the bolts at?

You should be able to use the same straps. I don't see why not unless they are obviously bad. I just tightened them pretty tight but not overkill.

Great writeup, just did mine and it makes it drive so much better especially since i have a 5spd it used to clunk in 1st-3rd.
This should be added to the tech FAQ if it hasn't already been.
thanks

I did mine last week but forgot to mark my shaft to reinstall it in the correct position. Big deal or not?
