Got some ?'s (wheel fell of on highway)

Lets start with the story:

on the way home from the mounds yesterday me and joe are going down m69 and with the cruze set at 65 (so we were doing over 70 anyways) i start felling bad vibes and they are on and off, then all the sudden they started and didnt quit, so i told joe (on the cb) to pull over at the next exit. so we keep driving and i swerve(sp?) from side to side and it feels like my trac-bar is broken (again) . so i tell joe to pull over NOW and right about the time i said that i start hearing noises like the tire is rubing the fenders, so i start geting to the side off the highway (still doing close to 70) and i fell the back left corner of my jeep drop down and i SEE MY TIRE PASS ME . *as in it fell off* .
so we find some lug nuts and get it back on there and gimp it home.
(we were not even to lansing yet) still had about 80 miles home.

THE DAMAGE:
Wheel is messed up (inside of rim is destroyed)
center cap was shreaded
new drums are messes up some how (back breaks feel funny)
All the stud threads are messed up
Maybe axle bent (dont think so, but maybe)

well lets just say, that messed up my day. It scared the crap out of me, i was still shaking when i got home, then joe desided that it was a video worthy moment
(which made everything so much better)


ok heres some pics of the damage







Ok the questions.
Now i slid down the highway on the drum, i dont know if it damaged it or not
Are they easy to bend?
Do you guys think i should just replace it?
I dont know if the axle is bent or not
What do you guys think from looking at the pics?
Can they just rebalance the wheel?
Or are the going to tell me its unsafe or something?
I know its out of balance
What else should i check out for damage?
Is it ok to put locktite on the lugs?

WOW, glad to hear your OK! At a bare minimum you will need to replace the drum and all 5 lug studs and nuts. If it were me, I'd also replace that wheel because there may be cracks that you cannot see, but at a minimum, have it inspected by a professional. As for the axle, it looks like you have an 8.25. I doubt you have a bent axle, but you may want to pull it out and take a peek at it. Also, when you get the drum off, inspect the shoes and all attaching hardware to make sure it's all OK.
As far as loctite, it's not a good idea. Properly torqued lug nuts are all that are required. When was the last time your wheels were off? and did you properly torque them when they were put on?

atleast i cought some video footage

and your crazy for trying to make me go walk down the middle of a busy highway to look for your lugnuts

and i want my spare tire and lugnuts back

did u mention how u cut that guy off while pulling back onto the highway

I think i will take it to discount tire tomarrow to see what they say

I have a D35c

I looked over the drum on the side of the highway but it was dark and cars were wizzing 3 feet from my head at 70mph so my mind was on different things.

I just replaced every part of the back breaks about 2 weeks ago

I take my wheels of and on weekly, i am alway taking them off to wok on something. I check the lugs at least once a week too. What is the right torque on the lugs? I ussaly just take a bid *** ratchet and a pipe and tighten them as much as i can, Maybe to tight?

I will probally just replace the wheel, i have to buy a nw center cap anyways $25, i have to pay for a balance (probaly $20) and they will propably tell me it is unsafe. so it will probally be better to pay $100 and and get a whole new wheel, (new wheel comes with a center cap)

oh i forgot that,

When i was merging back into trafic, joes headlights where blinding me and that and the mud on my windows = i couldnt see anything, i pulled out and almost hit a guy with a blue dodge, there was tires sqeeling and stuff, he almost crashed into the ditch. it was just another thing to add to a bad day.

Anyways, if that guy wasnt such a *******, he would have goten into the other lane when he seen people with flashers on. Not like there was a butt load of trafic or anything.

You don't have a full-size spare?

If you do, use that or get a new wheel. Then if you still have vibrations or problems with the brakes, I'd probably start looking for a new (and better) axle rather than try and repair a junk D35.

i dont know what it is with these trucks...but i had my front driver's fall off yesterday. it was an adventure....at least at about 5 mph. nothing big, i expected the wheel bearing to fall off. i know i've got bad bearings but i thought properly torqueing the wheels down with a spec'd out torque wrench would be enough....but i guess not. from now on i'm taking the 30" breaker bar to them until i can no longer push down on it.

any way....all i did to mine was shred the weights off. and i have some marks on the wheel but i've been looking into some new wheels any way.

the only thing that happened to me was a bent fender and some scars on the rotor....nothing a nice flat piece of concrete can't fix. i'm actually thankful and actually surprised that i didnt cut ANY tred on the tire. not even the sidewall.

i'm gonna run the same wheel (after the new balancing) until i get the new wheels. when i get new wheels i'm going with all new studs and new front bearings....of course the new bearings have new studs in them...

Proper torque is 85-115 ft. lbs.
I would at least put on a new wheel and drum, and would pull out the axleshaft and install 5 new lug studs and all new nuts. I'm sure you can pick up a used axleshaft for next to nothing if your unsure if it is bent. Also, check all your other wheels for looseness, cracked lug studs now, before you loose another wheel.

If you're going gorilla on the lug nuts with a pipe, maybe you stripped the lug nuts and they walked off. I would check your other lug nut threads.

If we're talking about normal-sized passenger vehicles (like an XJ), the correct torque for lug nuts is, depending on the manufacturer and the wheel, between 80-120lbs/ft. Most manufacurers recommend something around 90-110lbs/ft.

Just remember to tighten the lug nuts on a "star pattern", otherwise it is very much possible that one (or more) of the lug nuts isn't tightened properly -> the rest of 'em might get loose too. Also, if you're using alloy wheels, you usually MUST have correct type lug nuts - and they are different to steel wheel lug nuts. One thing to remember with alloy wheels is you should re- check that they are tight enough after about 100-200miles of driving after you've installed them on your vehicle..
