Good Battery / No Lights / Nothing
89 Cherokee 4.0 Auto A/C no mods 235K miles-
Saturday night my son (12) left ignition key on when getting a cd out of the radio. Sunday I jumped vehicle to use the jeep, did so successfully and it ran for 20 - 30 minutes, then while idling just quit.
I thought perhaps not charging and running it drained the jump charge.
I set up a trickle charge and left it on for 10 hours.
Tried to start nothing.
Put on the higher rate charge, still nothing.
Finally tested the battery full 13.8 volts. Still no lights / etc.
Going out to clean terminals.
What you said already.. Clean terminals and then check your other connections. XJ's notoriously need solid, clean ground connections or they will "misbehave."
Terminals are clean and tight. Pulled the ground from the block cleaned and replaced.
While they were off I clamped the charger to the connections separate from battery at 35amp and still no lights or anything.
EDIT: crawled under the jeep and the starter will work when jumped with screwdriver.
Question: Is there a main fuse / breaker something that would cut off all electrical function?
Found it- it was the smaller wire from the positive cable to the fuses on the fender well.
This very clean looking ring connector with the clear shrink wrap permitting visual confirmation of the contact to the wire was not working- crimped it through the shrink wrap and now OK.
Discovered accidently looking for a main circuit breaker or fuse and when moved saw a spark and headlights came on.
