Getting 31's, cheap regear to 4.10?

saw an ad on clist parting out a 2wd cherokee 2.5 and the rear c8.25 was for sale and has 4.10 gears. That gave me the idea of finding another front axle with 4.10's from another xj, which would be a little hard to find or one from a tj. Was wondering if there would be any problems with this? I'm clueless, just a thought instead of spending 1000ish regearing.
Mine is a 4.0 auto btw

I'm on 31's myself. I don't see the need to regear unless you're building up for 33's someday. Personally, I'd rather find two axles from the same vehicle if I was gonna do it. If you get the 8.25, why not just do a regear on your own front axle?

Just trying to save money, if I could get another dana30 with 4.10'a from a junkyard it's cheaper then a regear. College student life lol

Is the 31's and stock gears really not that bad? I've read a lot of people complain about it and say 4.10's makes a hell of a difference

With my stock setup, 4.0HO/5spd... I've got 3.07's and I do fine. Long hills on the interstate are the only place I suffer. But if I regear that far, all it'd get me is a lower top speed.

if you are only going to run 31's, there is really no reason to regear as your stock gearing will be able to handle those tires. I am running 33's on mine and am in the middle of re-gearing it due to I can't pull hills on the highway without the tranny shifting up and down and don't want it to wear that out. But your stock gearing can handle that size.

If you found the rear axle with 4.10s, a 4 cyl TJ front axle is likely going to have 4.10s and is a direct bolt in. It will be low pinion, though.

If your on a budget, don't bother. Stock gearing is fine with 31's.

I'm at 3" on 31's with stock (3.55) gears. It's OK but I tow a trailer sometimes and on hills I'd like to have a little more power so, when I get around to it, I'm going to regear to 4.10's. I don't plan on going any higher on this XJ so I'm wanting to get back closer to stock gearing and I have also been told that regearing to 4.10's with 31's should also increase my mpg (that would be a plus).

I don't see how you'd get better mpg's when you'll be running at higher rpm's.

If it's pure highway, the 4.10s wouldn't positively affect mileage. But, if you are climbing hills or taking off from stoplights, they will.

I wouldn't bother at all unless you know you're going to stay on 31" tires forever. An automatic with 3.55:1 and 31s will do fine for casual use, save the labor for when/if you go bigger. Unless of course your axles are in really bad shape and just doing a rebuild on axles outside of your Jeep would justify the cost and effort.

(For my daily driver I upgraded from 3.07:1 to 3.55:1 when I put on 31s. I don't plan on going any higher, plus, I did a total refurb and I was still able to get my *** to work. Rear C8.25 29-spline was about $80, front HP D30 was free lol)

Also, you won't find any drop-in axles from TJs. Rear axle is coil sprung, all perches will need to be redone! 4 cyl XJs with a manual transmission had 4.10:1 gearing.
