So, the one modification to my Jeep that i am the most happy about is the gastank. So, i fugure iŽd write something on here. Its my first post so beare with me.
Not really so complicated to do but what a cool mod for offroading i think!
So, my old gas tank was with more holes than ever expected. I ran my hand over it to clear som dirt and gas just started pouring out. So something needed to be done.
Out with the old rusty thing!
New shiny one!
Take the tank out from beneath the Jeep, measure the tank, then mark the floor of the trunk. (Mark it at least 2 inches smaller than measured. You do NOT want to make the hole to big..
Measure again! If you came to a different result than earlier, then measure again!
After i measured it twice,i cut a hole. The first hole is just to get started, make it at least two inches smaller than nessecary, then try to fit the tank, see where it catches and trim the edges until it fits snugly.
Eventually this is what you have, here the fuel lines are connected also.
On the side of the gas tank you see, on each side a metal strip with holes in it. This is how i fastened the tank to the car. A couple of screws on each side and that is enough. Before i srewed the screws in to fasten the tank i put some residue of some sort.. I dont remember what it was but some asfalty stuff to minimize risk of vibrations and sound comming thru.
Detail of the Gas filler pipe, its changed now.. I cut a hole thru the wall so it is now in the (Almost) where it used to be. Its behind the lid anyway..
After this i just made a simple floor over the hole thing, put some carpet over the floor and its done. A bonus is some nice stow-away places next to, and behind the tank. Here i keep all my recovery gear, oils and other stuff that i always have with me in the Jeep.
Unfortunately i have no pics of the end result. The boot is not much smaller, almost everything that fit before still fits but.. For offroading, to have 3 - 4 extra inches of clearing under the gas tank is awesome! Actually, I also left the tow hook bar in its place. It looks a little redicuolus hanging there all by itself but, it is a double protection for the tank so i left it in place. There is no extra road sound or water or anything comming into the Jeep. Before i put the carpet then you could hear the gas pump but that is one second before you start the Jeep so that is no issue at all.
I think this took three or four hours to make. How much of this time was actually spent drinking beer, i couldŽnt tell you
I hope you like my simple and quite quick but highly effective mod! If you deecide to make this mod on your Jeep, i would love to hear about it and also see some Pics!
