Fuel pump relay clicks, pump doesn't run
I've been surfing the forum today and haven't found the help I seek.
99 XJ 4.0. Relay clicks when I turn the key but the pump doesn't run, at all. I was about to drop the tank when Mother Nature painted the world white. Before I drop the tank, could it be something else? It there a fuse-link somewhere I should check? Jeep was running and simply refused to start one day. Thanks, Roger

I assume you tried swapping the FP relay with another (or trying a new one), just to be sure it really isn't just the relay? I don't recall ever hearing a 'click' when I turn the key on, maybe hear the fuel pump kick on, but no 'click'. Any fuel pressure at the fuel rail?
Perhaps a CPS? Does it crank and crank, but doesn't start? That is what happened on my 2000 Sport, and it was sudden, no symptoms. A very common Cherokee no-start problem. I would throughly investigate these two potential problems before I would dump money and time into a fuel pump replacement.

mhall02,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have, indeed, swapped out relays. The click can only be heard (felt) if I'm right by the relay as my son turns the key. It's not throwing any check engine codes. Should I expect this if it's the CPS? Thanks again, Roger |

The relay click is normal, theres a tab inside the relay that is pulled over magnetically to complete the circuit, you should hear this process in a proper working circuit. sounds to me like its the fuel pump. See if you can get it started for a few moments on throttle body cleaner, if it starts immediately on that, You know you have spark, and not fuel. Or check the fuel pressure at the rail while cranking or just with the acc on.

I scanned my Jeep when the CPS went out, no codes. Did check the fuel rail and I had pressure every time, so I assumed it was the CPS and got lucky. Maybe some scanners would pick it up, mine is an economy version from Autozone but have had zero starting problems since replacing the CPS. My replacement CPS is a Borg Warner from O'Reilly Automotive for ~$85.
Good thought on trying some sort of starting fluid to see if she fires up, how many miles do you have on the '99, my experience with fuel pumps have been they will last past 100,000 miles, 170,000 on the one in my van and 139,000 on the one in the Jeep (maybe I'm just lucky?).

Ive got 83 K on my 98 Sport, never had any fuel related problems. So the CPS fixed it? I worked on Dodge 1500 today that wouldnt start, I was able to read the code though, helped out the diag for sure. Code was for no CPS signal at PCM. Maybe it is the scanners, the one im using is the shops $8,000 Snap on Scanner, things a beast.

It's the crank sensor!

If you don't hear the fuel pump energize, concentrate on that as that is your primary symptom. If you don't hear the pump, you're not going anywhere......You're probably going to need a new pump if you have eliminated the relay as a possible cause.
Most original fuel pumps last more than 100k but I've seen em go early and I've seen them last an unbelievably long time too. Varies a fair amount. I had to replace mine at a bit over 90k. If I were you, as long as you're going in, I would replace the entire fuel pump assembly on your 99. Consists of the fuel pump/regulator/filter. Don't want to have to go back in later if you just replace the faulty component. Good luck and post back the results!
