FYI,, Just received email back from Mike Zaher, FUEL PUMP KING..

They are on vacation until March 13, 2011.


Just enough time to figure out what all I'm suppose to buy and replace

I get my stuff at Autozone now that it is available. Once upon a time these things were considered irreplaceable, but if your pump still works and just want to change the "filters", there are two and you just search for "strainers" on Autozone.com and you will find them. There are two different ones, and will cost you about $15-20 total.

great writeup. did this back in January out in my street in 10F, no lift ramps, nada. very fun though i practiced in a junkyard first. many thanks

getting those J-bolt nuts loose was the biggest challenge, definitely wish i had known about kroil or something stronger than PB. bolts were slightly bent sideways once off as they needed brute force strength to move at half turns.

97 oem sender resistance range is 20-270 Ohms, full to empty, respectively.

im replaceing my fuel pump right now, have been since 3oclock. i put in the new pump, bosch with the filter attached, buttoned it all back up tired to start it and nothing. ive been purging and trying to start it for about 3 hours now. the most i get is about 2-3 seconds of it shuddering and then dying. i checked the fuel rail and had no pressure at all.

so i broke down and took it all apart again. i put the OLD fuel pump back in and after about 5 minute of priming and trying to start, it firedup! very rough and hesitant start, but it started none the less. also had white smoke comming out the exhaust, but this could be from dipping my dirty hands in the gas right?

anyway, is the NEW fuel pump toast? should i get a replacement? i just dont know why a new pump wouldnt start...

ideas anyone, because im about to set my jeep on fire

Take your new pump, put it in a bucket of gas, and apply 12V and ground to it. It should be easy to tell if it pumps gas or not. If the fuel pump is still in the tank, you should be able to remove the Schrader valve from the fuel rail and do the same test when you turn the ignition key to "on".

If you know that you were getting 12V and ground to the pump, then it sounds like the pump is bad. Try another. You should be able to get a cup of gas pretty easily from the fuel rail.

i know that when i put in the new pump, i can hear it prime when the key is on, but no matter how long i try it wont start. i know with that the old pump it will start after 5 min of priming upon first installing and start on 1st or 2nd try there after. the only thing i can figure is either its a faulty pump, or i burnt it up after trying to start it off and on for ~3 hours. when i pulled the new pump out the first time, it was pretty warm. i can also shake the new pump and hear the fuel inside sloshing around. not sure if the gas is suppose to come out or not but nothing comes out.

im ganna go up tomorrow and get another pump and some clean gas. if that doesnt work i might just get a sh*tty airtex assembly.

Does anyone have this info or at least know where the fuel filter is on a 1989 ???

As I recall my 89's filter was under the jeep somewhere and definetly not in the tank

You forgot to spray off the bottom of the Jeep first so that you didn't get sand/dirt in your eyes every 5 seconds )


Never fails when I've had to do a pump replacement on one of my Jeeps. All the sand I thought I sprayed off weeks before some how ends up in my eyes.
