Front: True trac, soft locker, other?
Looking for opinions and solid advice. I have solid axles (no vacuum disconnects), D30, FRONT AXLE, 31s on factory wheels.

don't want to vote, or give you bad advice... I am going to run True-trac in my front and rear, so my vote would go to TT, but i have no experience with any of these except open, so...

if your rig is mostly your DD and you hit the trails once in a while, the true trac would be what i would go with

If you have wheeled before and not had issues I'd go with a Aussie locker up front. If you aren't that familar with wheeling a TT up front is way more forgiving.
I wouldn't go with a TT unless I was regearing. You'll need a new carrier then anyway. The Aussie runs around $250 or so. Fairly easy to install and no need to have a shop reshim the carrier. That alone will save you about $300-350.

I voted for the Truetrac, but then saw that it is not a daily-driver. My XJ is a daily driver, I have Truetracs in the front and rear, and I like it very much. They are way better than open diffs off-road, but not really noticeable in daily driving.
On the other hand, if you rarely drive on the road and want your XJ to have maximum off-road ability then I would either go with automatic lockers in both the front and rear (the lower-cost option), or an automatic locker in the rear and a selectable locker (like the ARB, or OX) in the front. |
