front end noise
my 98 xj is making a sound when i turn the wheels. kind of a knock out of the front. when i put it in 4wd it makes it louder and worse sounding. any ideas?
also i have a humming goin down the road outta the front. gets louder as it goes. i thought maybe tires because mine were bald but i got new tires and it didnt make a difference.

mine doesnt make that popping sound but i do have a hum while driving and im pretty sure the wheel bearing/hub assembly is shot(on both sides). so thurs night im changing both assemblys and axle u-joints along with new rotors and pads. im guessing your popping noise would be the u-joints on the axle since it gets louder when you have it 4-wheel drive. there is more stress on the joints then which is probably why the noise is exagerated. ill let you know what happens after i get all my new parts in/on thurs. hope this atleast gives you a point to start looking.

probably bad axle U-joints.. try grabbing them and wiggling to see if there is any play in them.
