after replacing my front axle U-joints I developed a leak on the driver side (short axle). At first I thought it was fluid left in the axle casing...but it kept leaking after a week. I then replaced the seals in the diff. now a week later that side is still leaking. what could be causing the seal to leak.
I don't know what would be causing it but I do know you can get waterproof axle seals for the dana30 from drivetraindirect. They're awesome, I had them on my last jeep.
Did you use a seal tool to seat the seals? if they get tweaked at all during install, they will leak. Also were you really carefull when sliding the axle back into the diff. Make sure you have the right, high quality seals and make sure they are seated correctly
I didn't notice a groove... but I am wondering if after replacing the ball joints and ujoint the axle may be in a slightly different position and the seal might now be riding on the axle surface that was previously exposed to the elements....(it is the short drivers side axle so it is easier for crud to get into the seal area).... Is it worth trying to clean that surface? If so how do I go about it?.. fine sandpaper?..
