Front axle howling bad..

Picked up my sons 98 cherokee from base the other day to drive it home and noticed something in the front that was roaring and got louder around 30-35 mph... Noise stayed there even with foot off the accelerator and even in neutral coastin with the motor turned off. Does this sound like a pinion bearing, carrier bearings, or wheel bearings? Only has 96k on it....

Hub bearings and pinion bearings are common problems for the D30. Hubs should be considered routine maintenance. Pinion bearing failure is often, but not always, accompanied by pinion seal failure. The pinion should have no play in the bearings when moved by hand.

If the carrier bearings are out, consider swapping in a junkyard axle. The junkyards are full to the fences with Cash 4 Clunkers and many of them were well cared for before they were scrapped.

Remove the front drive shaft and go for a drive. This may help eliminate the front drive shaft as the source of the noise. If you cannot determine the cause of the noise, stop by your local 4x4 shop and go for a test drive with a technician.

I just pulled my front driveshaft so it is still there... I have a feeling it is either the carrier bearings or one of the unit/wheel bearings. What is the best way to isolate one from the other??

On the front driveshaft or rear? I have the front one off right now and the yoke sticking out of the front diff has a tiny bit of play turning back and forth but no play up and down or side to side. The front driveshaft parts seem tight. I just took it for another drive and it sounds like I have Mud Terrain tires on the front when in fact they are plain street tires. I even rotated them to the back but no change in the howling.....

jack up the front end and grab each wheel for play in the wheel bearings, grab top and bottom of tire and push the top in while pulling the bottom out of vice versa, if their is noticeable play the hub unit should be replaced.

if there is no up and down play your pinion bearings are most likely not the issue. it still could be carrier bearings or the hub units, test the wheels as previous stated and get back to us.

for any bearing, regaurdless of application, i fit spins rough, or notchy, then replace it, it is bad. the wheel bearings will likely roar or be quiet on a right or left turn, depending on the hub. if it is constant, it is most likely the carrier and or pinion bearings. on my d44 both the carrier and pinion bearings were bad and no signs of leakage or play. they were tight, relatively smooth, but when i pullet them, they were pitted badly and obviously trash.

the hubs are what i would chech first.
