U-joints replaced, time for wheels

Alrighty, I've started my work but now I'm stuck. I took off the wheel, and the caliper is hanging off of my spring. Now I'm trying to take the disc off, but it's not budging. I was hoping to to just take off the hub without removing the disk, but that doesn't seem to be working. In the Haynes it says that I need to pull the 3 (12 point) bolts, but my dad claims that it doesn't have anything to do with my problem. Whatever the case, I went out and got the Axel Nut Socket (36mm on my 96 xj, if anyone needed that info), shoved it on the wrench, and gave it a pull.... NOTHING. I got a piece of pipe to give me more leverage and gave another great pull... Still nothing. Then I flipped it around and stood on the damn thing. Still nothing. Am I missing something or is it just a rusted over bolt/hub? I was hoping to get this done in a timely fashion, but everything seems to be working against me. Please help!!!!

The disc is supposed to come off without taking off the hub assembly. Id use some heat, chemicals, and a hammer tapping around the stud area.

Also, you're going to need +250lbs of force to get that bolt off.

i just got done replacing my hub in the autozone parking lot 3 days ago, not fun. if you need to take the rotors off, the just come off no need to take the hub nut off. if your rotors wont come off beet the crap out off em or better yet, use a propane torche on it then beat it off. its probly just rusted to heck on there is all. it will come off.

now if your looking to take your hub off, you have 3 12 point bolts on the back side of the hub that need to come off. as far as the hub nut, i had the same problem, bent 2 rachets before i heated it up with propane and used a breaker bar, broke so easy after the heat i was amazed.

awesome, tomorrow I go pick up a torch, and go "nuts" on that nut. Yeah, it seems that my entire disk is rusted onto my hub and as is the nut. I was holding that nut at the local Murray's just a few hours ago, I should have picked it up when I got the socket for it. BTW: I'm too lazy to look in that Haynes book, but what is the torque supposed to be on that bolt. But, if my physics classes served me well, I should be able to get 250 lb if I get about 2m of pipe to slip on the end of that wrench. Hmm... maybe... maybe... or maybe i'll just use heat.

One question... when you beat your discs off and heated them up, did it ruin them? I just want to replace the damn u-joint. Not u-joint, nut, discs.... You get the idea. Ayway, hopefully all this works. I'll tell ya tomorrow.

Cotter pin, good thought! I dont think you can put a 36mm socket over the crown nut though.

I took the pin out and the crown nut. I sprayed it as much as I could with WD40 and hopefully it'll move tomorrow. Whatever the case, I AM getting that thing off, one way or another.

Id recommend something better than WD40. PB blaster, liquid wrench or deep creep are all better than WD40.

I'm not sure what year XJ you have but if you have backing plates, why don't you just take off the backing plate instead of pulling the hub? If you remove the backing plate, the whole shaft will slide right out. Much easier. HTH

As far as the rotor: BFH

let me guess... pop the three bolts on the back? I'll definately give it a try today, but now that I've tried to take the hub off and I can't, it makes me want to get it off even more... even if just so that it's easier to do next time. My dad was sayin' that in his GMC Truck he was able to unscrew it with his hand and that it should be that tight. Who knows. Anyway, first I need to do some computer work to get some $$, then do a little car work, and finally I promised the woman to go out to dinner with her. This jeep thing has completely taken over the three days off that she's had. Whoops. I feel abit like how George Bush must feel... guilty and incompatent(sp?).
