Ford 302 swap in XJ

Been tossing the idea around of doing a 302 swap in my XJ. Im a chevy guy at heart but I know the ford transfer case comes out on the same side as the XJ just figured it'd be an easier install. Any input on this. I've heard of a few guys with cj's and possibly YJ's using chevy motors and trans with an adapter plate to the jeep transfercase. Would that also work with an XJ. I love my straight 6 but theres only so much I can do with it. Any input or info would be appreciated. Thanks

Why not a Mopar 318 or 360. I honestly don't know much on the topic but the way I figure it, a 4.0 and a 5.2/5.9 could be dropped into a ZJ. Maybe the engine mounts(or the brackets) are similar enough to make it a somewhat easy swap into an XJ. Although I could be dead wrong, but it's worth looking into.

Never thought of that actually. Definately something to look into. Whatever I build is going to be carbureted. I may just rebuild my 4.0 but who know's. I would like ot get some input now to figure out what I am going to do.

Try this forum as well: Engines & Drivetrain

A lot of guys on there have knowledge on various motors, they may be able to give you a better idea on what is involved in this type of swap.

Best of luck,
Brendan

Thanks, off topic but do you have a build thread for your xj, that parts list looks serious...

dont let motor mounts be a deciding factor of your build. putting motor mounts in for a swap is by far the easiest part of the swap, and the cheapest. things to think about are wiring, adaptor plates, tranny/tcase options, drivetrain length, etc.

novak has a lot of support for putting a 350 in to an XJ along with advance adapters. if i were to take any route id go chevy small block/tranny. simply for the reason that I would have to fab the least amount of parts, and the knowledge is easily available

I didn't realize they had the mounts and adapter plates for a XJ. So I am able to run a 350 and turbo 350 trans and mate that up to the XJ's transfer case with what Novak supplies then. I apologize for my ignorance, but I'm still getting up to par in the jeep world

One more question, how well would an xj's transfer case hold up to a mildly built 350 with a turbo 350 or 700r4 trans. I know mine takes all the abuse I can throw at it but when you start putting a lot of power to things you never know the outcome

Build thread looks good! I'm interested in how that D30 holds up the those tires. I am ordering some 37s for my jeep in a few weeks. I'll have to put the D30 through its paces.

I will let you know how they hold, Im givin it hell this weekend to see what all will break. My poor 4.0L might be the first to go though, Unfortunately the previous owner didn't take very good care of it before I got it. That's why I'm looking into a few different options
