I would open up the spare one and re-solder the connection really well so that it holds up better than it originally did (if possible). Of course this will probably never happen because every 97+ XJ that I find it already totally stripped apart because they're so popular.
If you find a spare switch assembly to play with here's what I did.

Very good write up. If I ever get one I will definitely use your pics to help me. Because I don't even really want the window lock function though, I would rather not crack mine open to fix it. My current one has some issues where it messes up the power lock circuit so that's another reason why I might get one.

Looks like a cheap and easy fix to my problem. I need to do this.

... so many LITTLE problems that bug me. But luckily i dont have any big problems, other than a lack of $$

Bringing this thread back to life!

Ok, so I did the mod, very helpful. Now I have created another problem. My power locks will lock from the drivers side door, but not unlock. Both functions work from the passenger side. I have seen in other threads concerning this that AZ Jeff has wiring diagrams for this, maybe someone else does too and they could PM them to me.

Any help would be great, I'm not sure why this happened when I did this fix.

PM me with your email, and I will send you the power lock wiring diagram.

If you can't figure out anything wrong with the wiring, the driver's door module may be bad. Sometimes when removing the door panel and yanking out the tight plugs, I think the board inside can get stressed a little and do some weird things. Maybe pick up a replacement at the junk yard (I would leave the window lock mod in place since even a working replacement will break soon too) or on eBay for cheap.

How would you heat shrink the connection if you stripped off wire insulation in the middle of the wire, and then soldered something to it. Do they make heat shink that isn't little tubes like I always see?
edit: heat shrink tape? I didn't realize they made that, I'll have to get some of that!
As usual I did mine the hard way. I cut those wires and reconnected them with those solder tube connectors, then soldered them and then used the heat shrink. Then I added a liquid wire wrap to make it moisture proof, and then covered all of these connections with that split tubing that runs all over most cars and zip tied this tubing in place to keep anything from rubbing through. Sorta overkill, but I tend to do this. Phil

Nice writeup but it's still way to complicated for such a simple fix. Less than 15 minutes for this way http://soxja.org/images/pics/Bypass/Bypass.html

Really need to search for these things, it's been posted multiple times.

Jumping the two wires in the kick panel is pretty much the same thing. It saves a little bit of time because you don't have to unsnap the lock rods, but I would still rather do it in the door.

I'm not sure who your "search" comment was directed towards, but if you read my original post, I acknowledged (with links) the two write-ups I followed and said that my reason for posting was to supply pictures of all the steps.
