Do they really have enough breaking power? those rotors look kinda small, I'm just worried about overheating when coming down a Long, Steep, canyon road. I've been wanting to do something like this for a really long time.

for the breaking power, disc are much better than drum, and if your worried about ventilation, find some slotted, cross drilled rotors. I really want to do this conversion. now time to find a kj in a junkyard

Had these for almost a year and a half and no issues. Towed a 4500# Explorer that was fully loaded with 4x4 gear and tools with 2 passengers and my XJ fully loaded with gear and tools and no issues what so ever.

I think you'll be pleased.

Disk is far superior in all aspects to Drums (power/heat dissipation/function), and all around is way more efficient.

My truck stops ok, but I have brand new EVERYTHING in my braking system, so it should. I still want to swap to Disks... safer, better for towing, etc.

Disks FTW

the rear disks are solid if I'm not mistaken, not sure it possible to have drilled, etc, they don't ever overheat from what can tell. the stopping power is better and more consistent in my opinion. If you install it completely including a prop valve you basically have ZJ brakes in a vehicle that weights what 500lbs less?

you can always find slotted or drilled rotors, ebay is great for that. I went with just slotted for my fronts after I bagged myself a trailor hitch. but my brakes need a lot of work

Is the parts list on the front page the COMPLETE parts list other than brake fluids etc which were mentioned later? I am going to call a few local JYs to see if I can get the swap parts together. My rear drums are making noise and I would rather have rear discs anyway. Thanks!

Nice write up. Its good to know that there is another option (without grinding out the backing plate no less) besides a ZJ disc conversion.

this may sound odd but why use an angle grinder with a sanding disc? the surface still looked a little rough.

why not just put it in second gear and progressively wet sand it by hand or with a sanding block? too dangerous, maybe?

not saying it isn't a great idea. i know my next brake job will be a lot cheaper and easier.

Within a few weeks they polished up to look just like a set of used rotors in good condition. All the scouring marks eventually dissappeared but you have to hit'em hard initially to get the surface corrosion free to start with.

I keep seeing this comment and it's true, I really need to re-visit this project and snap a few completed pics' with the rotor and caliper in place. The only problem is it doesn't look nearly as impresive now it has a good coating of baked on gloop!

Most guys run the stock master and it works fine.

The discs can handle more pressure than the drums and some guys modify their stock proportioning value by removing the spring and seal. I am running the stock prop valve and have had no issues.
