First Oil change!!
Alright, I am just doing the basic tune up stuff to the Jeep tonight. Since it has been sitting for 6 months and hasn't been driven. I was wondering, how many quarts of oil do the Jeeps take?
Well I stop being a slacker and read the other posts!! It looks as though 6 quarts is what I need. And if I read correctly, looks like I shouldn't use Fram filter.

6 qts is what the 4.0 takes.
I suggest the larger sized filters instead of the factory ones. Purolater PureOne 30001 is a good size. It's the same size as the dreaded Fram PH8a. You'll get a smidgen more oil capacity but you'll almost double filtering capacity. I would suggest getting 7 qts for the *little* extra and keep the rest handy if the jeep leaks/burns oil. Good oil and filter pays in the end. Just make sure you warm the engine good before you drain it ! Joe EndlessMtnFab |

Thanks Joe, great advice....I was looking at a Puralator oil filter or a K&N oil filter. I will not go with the "Dreaded" Fram. Why is Fram such a dreaded brand?

Long story short ... it's poor quality. Cardboard endcaps are the biggest problem. Cardboard breaks down when soaked in oil. And this is inside the filter. Not the best place, IMO. I've seen the shell blow, leak or swell too. And the filter media could be better, IMO. I know there are several sites on the web detailing the "disassembly and inspection" of oil filters. Anyone have a link handy? The only thing I like about Fram is the nifty orange color. It *could* have matched the Scout's paint job someday. Joe EndlessMtnFab |

I wish someone told me FRAM was no good before I did my second oil change last week! I was using a Bosch filter, but I liked the FRAM suregrip top, so when my hands were oily Id still be able to get the filter off. Ill change it again soon.

Before you go out and get the bigger filter like Joe said, don't. If you are changeing the oil in your 89 it won't take it. In 91' they changed the threads and they are able to take the larger Ford f150 filters but the 89's can't. You can, however, buy the adapter from the dealer for a couple bucks. Then you can use them.

The jeep dealer. I forget the part number but just ask for the oil filter adapter for 91' and later. Just the threaded part, not the whole thing. Then you will need either a 7/8's or 1" deep socket to remove the old one. Then you can use any mid 80's 5.0 ford f-150 filter. The mobile 1 filters are 301.

I didn't read the whole article so I might have missed something, but it doesn't seem to exactly point fingers at Fram and say do not buy. Like I said though, I didn't thoroughly read it, so I could have missed something. Thanks for the info guys!! Man, you guys are more help then my Mercedes message board I belong to.

Our 99 Dodge Ram 5.9L specs the same Purolator number #L14670 as the 92 Jeep 6cyl. These are the same standard small filter.
In my Dodge manual, they mention a severe duty filter for the 5.9 and it is the same Mopar part number as the standard filter for the Dodge V-10 engine. The Purolator number for the V-10 is #L34875 So.....If you look up the part number for a 99 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup with the V-10 engine, you can use that filter. It is the larger size! I also have a 91 Ford F150. It uses the big Fram PH8A filter, but the Purolator number is L30001. So, I'm not sure what the difference is, but I would not use the Ford filter. There may be different internal specs. Maybe different bypass pressure, etc. The Dodge filter should have the same specs, other than overall size, if it is interchangeable according to them. Just my $.02 Steve

Rweso ...
Thanks ! I didn't even LOOK to see what year that engine was. Shame on me. I did that conversion before MadXJ posted the info. Would have been a big help to me at the time. There *is* a bigger filter available with the metric threading, but IMO, it's is better to use that PH8a size. As it's very common and very cheap. The bigger metric filter, IIRC, wasn't as common and is more expensive. Sorry for the major flub there in not catching that adapter. Joe EndlessMtnFab |

Well, I will do my oil change with a decent brand filter today, which is what???
Then maybe this weekend I will run out to the Jeep dealer and get me an adapter. Then when it is time for the next oil change (3,000 miles) I will do the conversion at that time.
