Favorite oil??
I am needing to change the oil for the first time on my new crate engine. Im running a little behind too(about 6k. oops). Just wondering what kind of oil everyone uses in these 4.0's or if there even is a favorite. thanks.

I use valvoline durablend 10w30, but that's just me. I think alot of people swear by conventional oil in the 4.0l. As far as viscosity goes, with a new motor, just follow the owner's manual for the temperature in your area.

Ok bad boy, don't forget your oil change again. This running-in phase is extremly important to your engine clearances. In the running-in phase normally a thicker oil is used to compensate for tolerances that still exist in a brand new engine. Also oil consumption will be higher during this phase due to tolerances, that have to adjust each other.
After that phase, you can safely switch to a thinner oil viscosity. If you can afford it, choose a synthetic oil. Due to it's behaviour it can withstand a lot higher heat than mineral oil. If you are hard to your engine its the right choice, too. Simply go with the stock recommandations: 5W30 :from -20°F up to 60°F outside and 10W30 from 0°F up to 100°F outside just make sure you use at least API SJ or higher Enjoy your engine with regular oil and filter changes ;-) |

I've finally started to use a synthetic. I like the Castrol Edge because test have shown that it has greater lubricity than Mobil 1.
I like K&N Gold oil filters too.

If it was a new engine, I would use Mobil 1 as I do in my BMW. For my 143k Jeep motor I use Mobil clean 5000. Purlator filters are pretty good.

baby oil or that ky stuff
I use the oreilly house brand stuff, as long as you change your oil regularly it all should work, 6k is a bit long for break-in on a new engine. |

Yeah its actually just a re-built, not a brand new crate engine, if there is a difference. Well it is starting to get cool around here (Western NC) but I will probably still go with the 10w30 since I dont for-see it hitting 0 degrees F. We always use Cheveron but I was just curious if there was a favorite for the 4.0's
thanks for the help guys. |

I use Valvoline for conventional oil. I wouldn't use synthetic until it is broke in. 10k to 20k depending on your driving style. I use Rotella full synthetic from Walmart in almost everything but the lawn tractor. The Jeep, Chevy truck and Kia all run the Rotella with no issues.

My old, tired, peeing oil out of everywhere engine gets the cheapest **** I can find. I don't bother doing oil changes on it as I pretty much always have half of it new anyways.
But your engine? I'd be looking at the $5-$7 a quart stuff. Yours has a lot of life left in it and the first 10K will determine if you get 100,000 miles out of it or 400,000.

I like to use Pennzoil 10w30 with a Fram filter. It works great, but that's just my $.02

I run Castrol GTX 10w 30 over here in Charlotte in my 4.0. Always ran Castrol in everything I've owned. If it would hold up and not break down in my high revving little BMW motor (M10) then its gotta be good enough for the 4.0 (oil analysis showed that after 5k miles Valvoline had less life and more break down over Castrol GTX after 5k of the same abuse, Steady 3.5k RPM on the interstate for 60miles each way back and forth to work, and alot of back road and autocross runs, same filter, same lead foot) now before I get flamed, everyone has their opinion, and everyone was raised with different oil's. Their Father may have run this or run that so thats what they run and I respect that fully. I'm just throwing out what I found.
