Father son jeep

me and my dad are looking at cheap jeeps to fix up and do some serious off roading this summer before i head off to college. we found a cheap 93 jeep that cranks and is getting fuel and spark but doesnt run. it has new plugs, cap and rotor. what tests should we do too find out the problem?

My dad is buying a 95 XJ with only 1 flat tire and what looks like new exterior paint for 50 bucks! And yes it does run. Great condition.

O yea forgot to mention he knows the junkyard owner.

compression and leakdown tests.

compression test will tell you if there's even enough compression to run properly...they should all be withing about 10psi of each other, and should all be over 100psi ringing in about 150.

leakdown test will tell you which valves/rings or if a head gasket is needed. if you have air leaking into the throttle or exhaust, you'll need to break down the head. if you have air leaking into the coolant you need to replace the head gasket. and if you have too much air leaking into the crank case (through the oil cap) you'll need to breakd down the whole engine and put new rings/bearings in it. leakdown shouldn't be more than about 30% with an engine with over 100k miles on it.

the tools, both of them together...shouldnt cost more than about 50 bucks...and you can re-use them in the future when buying used cars.

WTF? You want a Brownie Point or something??

Anyway..........
Check the CPS (CrankShaft Positioning sensor) and fuel rail for fuel. Are the plugs wet? getting spark?

Also: If your going to be doing some "serious wheeling" you better get a manual real quick and start study'n it..... So you know some of the basics like, XJ's don't have "timing belts".

timing chain test:

1. get cyl 1 to tdc and mark crank hub and block, or mate to 0* mark or TDC mark on the hub. if your crank has marks, use them, if no marks, make them....got it??

2. once the marks are aligned at TDC, rotate engine counter clock wise, from the front pulley or bolt, and measure degrees until one of two things happen...one, the rotor under the cap starts to move, or the rockers start to move if you dont want to remove the cap.

3. on an engine with 100k miles, 8* is ok, no more than about 10. you'll see up to 20* on engines that havent been kept or have tons of miles...they need to be replaced. like i said, any more than about 8* and you'll start having low rpm problems. you wont notice too much at higher rpms.

or, if you already took off the cover and have access, there should be no more than about 3/4 inches of play at the longest part of the chain...between the crank and cam sprockets

I have no tech input at this point because it sounds like you're set for now. I'd just like to say this sounds like a great project to do with your dad.
