father n son vs 96 xj
well, we managed to score a deal today on a 1996 4.0/auto/4wd 2 door!
152k miles, runs ok i guess. havent road driven it yet, trac bar bracket on the axle is shot as well as a motor mount. we wanted to get something for our 13yr old to get his hands dirty with, teach him the ins n outs of jeeps, and teach respect. if he doesnt work on it, he doesnt get it! ![]() plans for it so far: remove engine/tranny/t.case. rebuild motor with slight over bore, new cam, and so on. just a mild build. get tranny rebuilt (i have never messed with an auto). fit a sye kit on the 231 and go through it all. 8.25 rear end so that is good. polish the hp30 a little with some shafts. i may learn to regear axles on this one, never done it before but i do have all the tools needed. dump the 4" lift it currently has. rest is undecided as of yet. . ![]() ![]() ![]() martin

Nice find on the two door, and glad to see you getting your son involved. Good luck with the build and the billfold once his addiction gets started.

thanks fellas!
yeah, i am sure the billfold will not be the same after he starts to pic out parts from all the old jeep mags etc he has in his room! the rebuild will become a 4.7 stroker, a new set of tires will become 37's, new axle shafts in the front 30 will become a dana 44 from a rubicon jk, and so on... will it ever end? ![]() if i have time before leaving i will snap a few more pics, but i have to leave on sunday so we will see..... martin

the range rover is rated at a whole lot more than the xj for towing!
as far as ratchet straps go, i use 2" on the rear, 1" on the front, with axle straps. if i slam on the brakes, there is over 6k of strap stopping under 4k of vehicle. my 1" straps are rated at 2000lbs, the 2" at 3333lbs. if you want to talk securement, we can if you want........but remember what i do for a living. it is a little more than a "hobby" for me. ![]() ![]() martin
