Take my advice on this one. PULL ALLLLLLLLLL of the carpet out and check everywhere for rot. But this bothers me the most:
![]() EDIT: NEVER MIND THIS ONE DOES. WHERE IS YOUR ELECTRIC FAN??????? ![]()

hey your right i never noticed that, is it somehting i can weld a support or maybe just throw some weld to reinforce that??? I know the undercarriage is rusty but....its mostly flake...i was thinking of just sanding down eerything, and refinishing it all....u think it is a big big deal that crack?

I'd suggest spend some quality time under the heep with a grinder (wire wheel) and start looking for more cracks like that. A not so gentle tap with a ballpeen hammer will also reveal other weak spots. Assuming the rig is worth the time and effort, frame rail reinforcement might be your only option.

I hate to bring you down cause you seem happy, but....
Around here we see a little surface rust, up north like Ohio or Michigan they see real rust, but that my friends is a rust bucket. I mean I bet if you took a hammer and just tapped each floorboard it would go through and the same for that frame rail. You are gonna need one hell of a power sander, a big grinder, a good compressor, a few gallons of POR-15/Metal Ready, some metal, a welder and like 100hrs+ of time. Muchless everything thats rotting out from the rust. I have NEVER seen a set of axles that rusty and the t-case is stained brown, uggh.

On the other hand you can order complete new floorpans and I'd get some *clean* C-channel and AFTER the rust is removed I'd plate the unibody. Then get new doors/fenders, etc..
Its gonna be a project, I can see it costing a very good chunk of change to get it somewhat not rusted out.

wow, canadian winters really do eat cars alive.
I would at least weld up the cracks in the framerails (grind off the rust, run a nice, deep heavy bead over the crack and spray with rustoleum). You need to get another aux. electric fan, because yours has vanished. You need a new radiator as well. New floorpans are a must, I can see the road under the drivers side. Once you get that stuff done just drive it until it breaks. or shatters. and good luck.

maybe i will take better pictures tommorow, but it seems to be only the left side of the vehicle, like....the bolts from the seat rails are rusted out on the drivers seat but the pass is perfectly fine and the bolts look like new, same with the floor plan....now, i assume that crack is on the drivers side. The reason for all this rust is the car has sat for 2 years, and well, there was moisture under the carpet....so im gonna pull it all out sunday and do a finer inspection, but i dont inspect it that bad in the back and on the pass side, time is not my best friend, but neither is money, but, i will get this rig good as new!

also, once i get down to the metal, what would be the best way to reinforce it? Would i just lay some sheet metal, or thicker, over the area and weld it right over top of where the crack is? Maybe weld the crack shut first then do that....? I got into my second year apprentice as a mechanic so i am very mechanically incline, but body work is new to me....anyone can shed some light? Thanks for all other input also, your posts did kind of get me down, but i am confident i can get this rig back up....plus there are a few junkers in the yard nearby, i was going to check them out next week see what i can get, but i want to use this jeep...besides, for 800CND i think i got my money for the engine itself, its practically brand new....

He doesn't have the electric fan because he doesn't have air conditioning. The Cherokees/Comanches without a/c don't come with it, and they have an idler pulley in it's place, which the guys with heavily modded rigs like. From what i've seen before, there isn't even a connector or relay for the electric fan should you want to put one in. You'd have to wire it up yourself.
Other than what's already been said.. since it's been sitting for a couple years, if it hasn't been started up occasionally, you might find that a few seals or gaskets will start leaking from getting dried out. The 'frame' rails do look pretty rusted... The pic of the driver side carpet lifted up.. are those rust flakes sitting inside the frame rail or is the frame rail rotting from the inside too? I'm not sure if it would be worth it to try and fix it if they are rusted that bad. It wouldn't be safe to drive. Do you have any pics of the Jeep as a whole? And the interior? .. and how many miles are on the engine? |
