Erratic speedometer, fuel gauge, tach

I have a 1996 Cherokee classic. Recently, the gauges have gone haywire, flipping back and forth and then ceasing to function at all. I checked for a trouble code, but there isn't one. I changed the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), but it didn't do any good. Does anyone have a clue what could be the problem? Maybe the computer? How to check?

Try cleaning the connectors in the back of the panel. It seems to be a problem in many jeeps. I have a 98 had to clean them. And there have been a few posts with instrument related problems.

I had the same problem when my battery died.

I got a bost from the shopping store gaurd and drove home but all the indicators were going crazy because the old battery was shorting out continually.

Bought a new battery installed it and all is now fine !!
