Engine noises
hey i have a 98 cherokee with the 4.0L I6 engine. recently its started to make a weird rattling/squeeking noise coming from what it seems to be like inside the engine =/ ... it only makes the sound at idle ( in neutral or in park ) once its in a gear the noise will go away ( most of the time) ....the noise goes away once its being driven, so pretty much whenever the engine is not under a load, it makes this weird noise. its not the belts or any of the pumps ( water, power steering, AC compressor ) i cant figure where the noise is coming from or what it even can be ! please help !

98jeepxjlimited,
My 99 has started doing the same thing. Sounds like it is coming from bell housing area. Originaly I thought it was a sticking starter selonoid. Then I noticed that the power accessories (windows etc.) don't work when the noise was occurring. This led me to the starter switch. The switch cuts power to all accessories when the starter is engaged. I replace the switch a couple months ago and the problem went away - until last night! I'm starting to think it's trans / torque converter related. Have you found a cure? |
