Xj Engine/head replacement - opinions sought

So I blew the engine in the 98. Pulled the engine from a 93 to rebuild & replace it. It will be a 4.x stroker. I have the choice of three heads to put back on. I don't have the casting codes A friend is trying to sell me a rebuilt/refreshed head with a 89 date code, so I assume from a 90. I have the head from the 93 with a 92 date code, or the head from the 98 with a 97 date in the casting. I assume that what I have is a 2682, a 7120 and a 0630. My current thoughts are to spend the money towards refreshing the 0630 head. Does that sound like the way to go?

Thanks

~Riley

The 7120 and 0630 are this close to being the same. Some people claim that the 7120 will add a few HP. Either way you go, you should be smoothing out any casting boogers, port matching, and polishing.

Okay, discovered something else. My friend's head that has been redone has some of the coolant passages sealed off. Would this be an advantage? I am thinking he probably did so to put it on a 4.2 block...

I think that would make it a no-go for an XJ, unless you can get all the passages open again.

Yeah, I am just not sure why it was done. 4.2 block is the only thing I could come up with...

Probably so it could be put on a 4.2 block, that's a pretty common thing with the FI swap on the older engines.
