Engine dies while at stop light

I have had a hesitation problem on acceleration with my 1987 XJ. It only occurs when I accelerate from a full stop, like at a stop light. Up to now it has only been a slight hesitation and then things go on as normal. Recently, however, the car has started dying at stop lights. I hear the hesitation and then 'dead'.

I have replaced the fuel filter and done a complete tune up but, the problem is getting worse. Could it be the fuel injectors? I also replaced the CAT and exhaust.

Unplug the EGR vac line and plug it. If the hesitation stops at lights, replace the EGR valve.

Man i am having the exact same problem with my 87. I have new plugs wires, cap,button, TPS fuel filter, Air filter and was gonna replace my Cat but not sure now. Does your's also start right back up after its quits?

mine was starting to do that a few months ago.......i took the idle air control motor out cleaned it up and clean up the throttle body housing. it has been working fine since. try it.....i was hesitant, but it worked for me.

The fuel pump could be in need of replacement also..They are in the tank of course..The tank does not have to be removed...The pumps have a sock like filter on the pickup tube that can get gunked up also..Especially on older XJ's that have sat...If its the fuel pump you will probably notice it the most when you mash the gas or go for passing gear which is a sign of not getting enough fuel...It will stumble , hesitate or backfire slightly even..

So if the strainer is clogged would it be better just to buy a new one?

I had the same problem. A new TPS solved it for me. If your TPS is original, it's a pretty safe bet that it's a bit "tired."
