Electrical problem: Low voltage and battery doesn't charge

I just picked up a '92 cherokee laredo to use as a beater on the farm (pics as soon as I get a new camera).

When I got it the battery was dead. Jumped it to get it home. My bro and I have since changed the battery. The problem is that it needs to be jumped every time even though I disconnect the battery when it is off. The voltage gauge only reads about 8v and dips lower when I use the power windows or seats.

Does any one have any wisdom to offer. It runs so I assume the alternator is good and all the electrical components work. Thanks for any advice.

Tom

Alt is shot.....just because the motor is running doesnt mean that the alt is good, the motor can run for a substantial amount of time before going completely dead. (once drove my jeep for 3 days with a bad alt)

Alternator is dead and is running off of battery power.

The '92 is carbed right?

So it doesn't need much power to power just the spark plugs.

Forgive me, I'm not too familiar with the elderly genre of the Cherokee species

Still not a lot of power required for the older generation EFI. I know my 90 doesn't take more than probably 10 amps total to run.
