Effortless Rust Removal - Write-Up

I read about this process several years ago in a restoration book and stumbled across the internet version of it tonight.....it's just too cool NOT to share!

http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoepp/electrolyticrust.html

BTW...Kiddie pools, cattle troughs, plastic 55gal drums and old fiberglass bathtubs are superb for auto parts!

Used this method on a set of badly rusted rims. Works well but requires time and elbow grease for the final cleaning. I soaked each rim for about a week before wire brushing/wheeling the loose stuff off.

Dude, thanks.

I restore/rebuild old musclecars as a part time job/hobby, and some of the stuff guys bring me are completely irreplacable, rare items, and they are usually small mechaical parts that need to be cleaned and detailed that are too delicate or rare to be subjected to any kind of media blasting. (EX: 1970 Cougar Eliminator Ram Air Assembly. LOTS of marvelously rusted and unavailable intricate parts between the air filter housing and hood seal.)............I wish I'd seen this sooner. I'm gonna do a set of original magnum 500's this weekend.

Awesome. Thanks.

Glad to help bud, my initial interest in the process was for antique iron tools ect then saw great potential for rust-cake covered 4X4 parts. What I love best about the process is how it works right at the surface of the good metal to clear every pit and crevice. Mixing your calcium carbonate a little towards the heavy side improves how well the process works because it conducts more current, you can buy the quality stuff cheaper and in larger quantity from swimming pool chemical supply stores. If you guys try this out after reading it take some before, during and after photos to post....I need to do the same if I ever get a break from repairs to do 'restore'.
