Which E-Brake Cables?

I just put disc brakes from a ZJ on my XJ.

I need to hook up the hand/emergency brake tomorrow. However, i still need to buy the cables. Which cables do i buy? ZJ cables or KJ cables?

The ZJ axle i bought had the e-brake setup still on it, but it seemed to be too short. This is what it looks like;

What do you think?

There's no "emergency" brake on your car. There is a PARKING brake, which should be used whenever you park.

search online for part numbers DBC-06 & DBC-07. Those are cables specifically made for the 97-01 XJ with disc brakes. There are other numbers for earlier years, too. http://www.jeep4x4center.com/rough-t...m_campaign=cse Morris, Rusty's, and other sites sell them. They work great, have them on my XJ.

Thanks a ton. Those are specially made for what i'm doing and are half the price.

Thanks dude.

Would this work for lifted XJs? I think that the ZJ cables that I got with the brake components would have fit my XJ if it were stock. But it seems way too tight to put them on and I'm sure they would brake off if the axle drooped!

Also, what is the deal with KJ cables? I have an 89 XJ so I can't use those meant for 97+ since my cables hook up to the middle of the underside just over the drive shaft.

Note: I have an 89 XJ with 5.5 inches of lift in the rear...

YJ *passenger-side* brake cables are about 10" (?) longer than XJ cables. Get two. Cross them, left for right...

(I presume this will work for an 89... it's what was suggested for my 95.)

Thanks for the response! Do you have this setup installed right now? What is your opinion? Do you confirm that you use this setup with ZJ disc brakes? Are you talking about stock YJ cables? Could you give me a part number so I don't get the wrong one?

Thank you very much! I need this to work so it can pass inspection! :-)

Sorry, no. It's high on my To-Do list though.
And I don't know IF or HOW the disc brakes are different
Don't have a P/N either... If you look online, the YJ cable (*passenger-side*!) should have it's length specified. Just compare it to the stock XJ cable. Should be 10" or so longer.
There might even be write-ups here, but I haven't looked lately.
Good luck!

Oh right! lol

Couldn't really find anything clearly labeled as what you described but i found this:
http://www.jeep4x4center.com/rough-t...52-dbc-05.html

I sent them an email and they replied that it would be the closest in length for my setup.

Should I go for it?? I need this cable urgently to pass inspection!

According to Autozone, the stock length (for each side) for a 1995 Cherokee is 52.25" (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...6_0_9595_18994), so that one won't be long enough if/when you are off-roading.
It MIGHT be long enough for street, and it might let you pass, but it might be tight up against the CAT or muffler...
This is the one I will be ordering when I get around to it: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...=912692_0_6739_
It's almost 71" long (a bit longer than I remember)!
And again, I have no idea if it's suitable for a disc brake conversion.
Quadratec has a Terraflex kit that's about that long, but they specify it's only for THEIR disc conversion setup...

AND, now that I've re-read your OP, which cable(s) are you missing?
The ones going from the brakes to the adjuster, or the ONE going between the lever in the cab to the adjuster??

Well, 70" seems too long and teraflex cables are incompatible.

I researched yj cables and I found these:

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/rough-t...le-dbc-01.html

They are 64.75 inches long so seems suitable. I'm just concerned about the tips, I hope they are the same as the xjs! I heard that all that is required is a slight modification to the little springs...

What do you think? Shall I take those?

That's why you criss-cross them (passenger side going to drivers, and vise versa), but the ones you found are probably a good choice (assuming they need little or no modification).

Yes that's what I'm expecting (criss cross) and to me it's better to gave too much cable than not enough!

Those you linked don't seem good for an Xj with disc brakes because the ends are for classic drum brakes... Mine seems to have the same style end as that of a zj which would make they'l them fit the backing plates perfectly.

Well... There are times one must stop talking and start acting. I'm ordering the one I found. Fingers criss crossed!! Lol

I finally found a good writeup for YJ cables on an XJ: precious information, this. I would have gone for 90 and before YJ cables when you actually need 91+ cables!

http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...ake_Cables.htm

That's why in the end, for disc brakes, one must purchase these 91+ disc brake cables for any XJ.

http://www.jeep4x4center.com/rough-t...75-dbc-03.html

Will report back one the cables are mounted! :-)
