Drum brakes write-up. hope it helps

yea i was writting this write up but i deleted it by accident. anyway, long story short i need to do the drum brakes. heres a write up for it. the parts i got

-new drums
-shoes and lining
-new harware
-brake adjuster cable
-few bucks
-friend that works at monroe as assistant manager
and the right tools.

you can make do by jacking up the rear and supporting the frames on jackstands. chock the wheels. mine was put on a lift in the shop after hours. hehe

goin up...

remove wheels and inspect what else might need looking over and fixin. look at those herendous leaf packs. so sad, theyre causing me some wierd vibes.

remove the drum. a few whacks of the BFH and it was off

start taking the parts off after studying it so u know how to do it on the other side. i suggest you do one side at a time. we had four guys workin. goin out for drinks so the job got done quicker this way.

broken brake adjuster cable

remove wheel cylinder. you will need to bleed the brakes if youre replacing these.

emove wheel cylinder. you will need to bleed the brakes if youre replacing these.

new wheel cylinder.

start reassembling in reverse order. needle nose pliers and vicegrips help lots. along with a brake puller.

puting parts together with new hardware

new adjuster cable

10 pic limit

Nice write-up with pics. It should definitely help people, especially since you show plenty of pics.

If you submit this into the Tech Articles section and it gets accepted, you'll get a free upgraded one year membership... just some food for thought.

Nice writeup btw.

Good write up. While you had it all apart, you should have taken a wire brush to the backing plates, especially the rusty parts where the brake shoes rub up against it. We also use a little dab of white lithium grease in the same spots, which helps the brake shoes slide back and forth.

You could have also covered the bleeding process for the wheel cyls and also the adjusting of the shoes to the new drums. And don't forget to get that grease off of your new shoes using some Brake Kleen.

agreed on the wire brushing. i really had to make sure the new cylinders had a good mounting surface when i did just this process a few months ago. my brake lines were rusted onto the back of the cylinders too, so i had to bend up new lines too. they're 3/16 if anyone needs to know

How do I know if I have 9 or 10 inch brakes?
What do I measure? The shoes or the drum?
